Questions about gettting a cat/kitten from a rescue centre

Just a couple of questions,

How long do you need to keep them indoors for before letting them out for the first time?

How old do they have to be before getting them neutered? if not already done obviously

thanks

1 - I kept mine in (and the fosters) for 5 months but I think you can probably do it after 2.

2 - 6 mnths.

Let me know if you decide to as I have a kitten/cat (about 7 months old) who needs a home (foster kitten for a rescue) but depends on where you live.

Hi we got our first cat from a rescue centre and he is the best cat i have ever had! We kept him inside for 2 and a half weeks and have had no problems with him.

To get them neutered they should be 5/6 months old, but your vet will advise you best on that.

Good luck!

My female cat was 6mths when spayed, our vet likes them to be over 2 kg weight. We used to take her around the garden on a kitten harness and lead to stop her escaping, and so that she could get her bearings. Didn't let her out on her own pre spaying, high density of cats around here, and she was half the size of them!

If an older animal, 2 weeks before letting them out.

I got 2 kittens (brother and sister) from a rescue centre last August. At the time they were about 8 weeks old.

I was told i could not let them out until they had been neutered and the earliest i could have this done was when they were 5 months old. I was especially keen to get them neutered being male and female.

Once they were neutered at 5 months old i was told to keep them in for 2 weeks to heal properly and only then was i able to let them out.

And i must say they are the most beautiful well natured kittens i have come across in my life (maybe i am biased lol)

One of our cats came from a rescue centre and he is an absolute softy - very affectionate, lovely but stupid.

The cat that came from a "good home" is semi-feral, kills every small bird or mammal she sees and is the least affectionate cat I've ever had.

So don't let the "rescue cat" element put you off

I keep my new cats in for 2 weeks.

Vets used to have a limit of, say, 2kg for spaying but this has come down and a lot of vets will do it earlier.

Good luck!

I can't decide if we should put our names down for a kitten or get a slightly older kitten/cat.

the reasoon I asked about how long to keep it in for is because my friend has a house cat and when I go to her house I can only stay for 45 minutes tops as I start sneezing and wheezing and coughing. My dad however has always had cats and they go in and out of the house and i've never had a problem. I've stayed with them for holidays and never been bothered by his cats.

So if we only had to keep it in for a couple of weeks then I'd probably be ok, with lots of antihistamines as well, but I'm not sure if I'd cope with keeping one in the house for 5 or 6 months, might be to much for me.

Thanks, I'll keep pondering

Linnet - I'm a worrywort. I would have thought if a vet says 2 weeks it'll be fine.
Check with the rescue if need be.

I think most rescues will tell you that you will have to keep a kitten in longer than 2 weeks as they'll need to be "done" so they dont get pregnant/impregnate other cats when they go out so I'd go with older.

We got our Salem when he was 6 months old and he is still not (3 years later) the same kitten we picked up then

Good luck

It will depend on the age - and if they have been neutered. If you go down the cat route (rather than kitten) we find that the time depends on the cat and they will tell you when they are ready - not that it will stop you spending your time standing in the garden waiting for them to return for the first days. Great thing to do - enjoy.
