BARF diet for dogs

I have only been a dog owner for 6 months and have never had a dog before. I am very interested in the BARF diet and wondered if there was anyone out there with experience (good or otherwise) of this. I would really like to hear your views.

BARF is fine in principle but it really is critical that you educate yourself on nutrition properly before embarking on it. I think the underlying idea is great actually, but I often see it being applied incorrectly and I suspect it may in these cases cause more problems than it might prevent.

Thank you, I can see from what I have read that it takes a bit of work to get it right. I just feel really sorry for my dog eating kibble every day and he doesn't like it. It doesn't feel natural - no differences in flavour or texture must be really grim.

bump. Anyone else with any opinions or experience on this?

I've always fed my dogs raw meat and never complete food, but when I changed breeds 2 1/2 years ago, I gave the BARF diet a try, as this is what the breeder fed and have never looked back. I would strongly recommend you invest in 2 books both by Ian Billingshurst - Give your Dog a Bone and The BARF Diet - very informative. As well as having totally healthy dogs, the other huge benefits of BARF are clean teeth, fresh breath, less poo, shiny coat and very happy content dogs.

Thank you Hikeymo, that's very interesting. Where do you get your supply of bones and meat? Are there any companies that supply it in bulk to stick in the freezer?

Hi, we have 3 dogs all on barf. We get it delivered in frozen portion sizes and bought a large freezer for storage. Poos are much smaller and less urine on it as not drinking so much water as they do with kibble.

Various companies deliver in bulk - ours does once a month. What we get is a complete diet of bark and we supplement with value chicken wings, raw veg etc.

Would never do kibble again.

Thank you. It sounds like a thumbs up. Hercules1 do you have the names of any companies that deliver in bulk. I haven't had any luck finding anyone.
