MY DOG HAS JUST EATEN A BUMBLE BEE!.....

My delightful but naughty JRTx has just eaten a bumble bee. She has just spent the last few minutes eating grass but hasn't, as yet, been sick. Do I get her to the vet anyway? They're now closed so it'll mean calling them out which is why I thought I'd ask on here first! She seems ok and is now fast asleep. I've checked inside her mouth and can't see any swelling etc.

Hiya! Thanks for that. Stupid bloody dog...DH saw her chasing it around a plant so the bumble was minding his/her own business only to be caught and consumed by my stupid dog. I'm going to take her out in a min to see how she behaves on a walk - if she's her usual loopy self then I know she'll be ok but knowing our luck I half expect her to be at the vets by the end of the day.

whispywhisp - watch out for the dog's head or tongue swelling up.

We had a dog that ate a wasp and got stung in his mouth. My Mum gave him half an aspirin in milk and it took it down again. Maybe you should consult a vet though if the dog has an allergic reaction rather than just shoving an aspirin at him/her.

FairMidden · 14/03/2009 14:00

You can give a dog of this size a single adult Piriton tablet in a situation like this. I would advise skipping the aspirin - although not quite in the sampe league as ibuprofen and paracetamol for poisonings, it's generally not a good idea to give dogs human pain meds.

(I'm a vet btw)

report her, I'm sure they're protected

My cat chases bees and wasps. What should I do if she ever catches one and eats it?

cornsilk · 14/03/2009 14:34

I was told that bumble bees had no sting. Is that not true then?

belgo · 14/03/2009 14:35

My cat once caught and eat a bumble bee. She was fine.

It never occured to me it could be a problem. Interesting advice about the piriton.

whispywhisp · 14/03/2009 15:00

Well so far she seems ok. She's just wolfed down her dinner so I'm guessing she's fine...until the next time cos I really don't think this morning's episode will put her off trying again!
