All my dogs that have chewed have loved old socks tied into knots - lots of pairs, lots of knots - you end up with something quite solid that makes a good pull toy (and can also go in the washing machine!). Kong toys can be filled with interesting things to get out, and even frozen with them. Current dog was completely stick mad - when we first got her we found a largish stick that was quite hard and not splintery - we let her have that one stick in teh house - that was her 'house' stick and wasn't allowed out, and outside sticks weren't allowed in.

Hide chews are also goot - you might think that it costs a lot to buy them, but its cheaper than buying new shoes or furniture

we have bought her chew toys and a hyde toy that is also a tugger too she has a kong that we put kong stuff paste in which she sniffs for 2 mins and leaves. will do the frozen idea thats seems good as she loves ice cubes from the dispenser.

Old socks seem to be a hit (perhaps they smell of us - what with the 'just washed socks' smell together with all the contact required for knotting tightly) - much more so than any specially designed toy. Old tights (again, knotted together tightly) is another one, but rather when the dog decides to play and chew with them when someone is round that you really don't want your old tights to be on show for !!!

The other thing to say is that, to make things interesting for her, play with the toys with her - hopefully should make it more interesting. Our dog liked her kong toy stuffed with biscuits - and if you wedge them carefully and very hard, it is really difficult for them to get them out - but your puppy will need something easier otherwise she will lose interest.

Those hide chews are not good as dogs are daft and swallow large pieces that can block the gut with fatal consequences if you don't realise and expensive ones if you do as surgery is often needed. Pigs ears. They are greasey and smelly and too many will give them the trot(ters!)but dogs love them.

I've got a 12 week old lab (Zac) he is just gorgeous but has already ruined £600 of dining chairs!

Went to pet shop last weekend and the guy recommended pigs ears and a big bone that won't splinter (like the hide chews do). Really seem to have done the trick.

an empty bottle with the lid on does the trick with my puppy.

She loves the 500ml size and will play and chew with one for hours!

mistlethrush · 16/03/2009 16:35

PMKB - watch out with that - we used to do this with one dog but she cut her gums on the cap/screw bit on the bottle quite badly - we'll only play holding the cap bit now.

We agve our puppy (Now 1 year old) socks to chew, and he then decided "huh, I'm not chewing these socks when there are tons of lovely washed ones in the laundry basket that I can chew and eat and it will come out in my poo, then I will progress to tights, which I will swallow whole. Then to door frames and skirting boards, and my all time favourite, electric sockets"

Good luck with your pup, what breed?
