Something shocking happened to my cat - not traumatic to read but can you shed light?

Yesterday my boy cat Yang had been out for about 30 mins or so. DH walked into the kitchen and he was sat there on the floor with blood pouring out of his eyes (the sockets) and nose. To say we were shocked is putting it mildly.

Yang is 9, he is white, with long very fluffy hair. He is sweetest cat ever, lovely natured, he is actually our constant puppy.

Anyway we rushed him to the out of hours emergency vets. Yang is insured and we have made so many claims for him while his sister Yin has never had a claim!

While sat there in the waiting room we noticed a small bloody little hole on the top of his head between his ears. Very precise and not a lot of mess around it.

Vet looked him over and was shocked at the injuries. He said the wound on the head was the cause of the bleeding in the eyes/nose, that he had a very severe impact there on the head that caused brain trauma. He was shocked he was hit hard enough to cause that bleeding but he still managed to be ok, his pupils were normal, he was walking and responding normal etc. Vet wanted to keep him in for observation til Monday but we wanted to take him home, Yang has been in hospital for a month before and it was so traumatic for him. We are 10 mins away from this vet and promised to take him back there if he deteriorated at all. The vet said he had a very very lucky escape.

He was given an anti-inflammatory injection and an anti-biotic and we have to take him back on Monday to our regular vet. He might need a skull xray but they couldnt have given him one yesterday anyway because of the head wound he couldnt have had anaesthetic.

The vet said it "could" be an air rifle but it didnt look like a classic air rifle wound. And it "could" be a car but didnt look like that either as his paws etc were fine so didnt looked as though he had been dragged. He said it "could" be a person, i.e. who hit him with a shovel or something but the wound is so small and precise. He really has no idea what could have caused it. I would pay good money to know.

We are keeping the cats in til Yang is fully recovered but even afterwards I am afraid to let him out again. He has had such bad luck and I am afraid one of these days he will get killed and not make it home and we will not know what happened to him or be able to help him. I am just so grateful he made it home yesterday with such a bad head wound.

I'd have thought airgun/pellet gun too

Make a call to your police station and see if anyone else has reported anything. They will need to be alert if it is people doing this so as to keep a look out and record of compaints to help with prosecution once caught.

I wouldn't think they are targettig your cat. It's just a case of wrong time and wrong place. I am sure they will be fine going out again.

belgo · 08/03/2009 10:17

How awful. I would also speak to the police about this.

KnickKnack · 08/03/2009 10:29

I think it sounds like a pellet gun. Poor cat, at least here they normally only use them on shop windows.
I would also report it to the police, just to bring it to their attention.

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 10:31

I hadnt thought of calling the police til you said it but I will do that.

I know these things happen - air rifles etc that people are cruel and idiots. But truly I dont understand why anyone would hurt an innocent animal. I just dont see what they could possibly get out of it or how they could enjoy it or want to do it or feel good about it afterwards. Yang is like this eternal baby really he is such a family joke, we are always joking he is one step away from being in nappies he is the sweetest cat I have ever known and it just breaks my heart that something so scary happened to him and I wasnt there. And I will likely never know!

It does sound like a pellet, poor thing did the vet see it on the x-ray?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 08/03/2009 10:33

At least you got him help when he needed it. He will know that.

I agree people can be so cruel. Harsher punishments need to be brought into place for those who mistreat animals.

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 10:35

no scrooged the vet couldnt do the xray because he would have had to sedate him and with the brain trauma he likely wouldnt have woken up again. So he might be xrayed on Monday. You dont think there could actually be any sort of pellet still in his skull do you?

I dont understand people. I really dont. I know the vast majority wouldnt be cruel and I am grateful for that but there are those who just seem to delight in causing pain and I just dont get it.

scrooged · 08/03/2009 10:40

It's highly likely that it's still there. If it is a pellet it will show up on the x-ray so you could call the police then. The pellet wouldn't have bounced off you see so it would still be there .

I don't understand them either. You'r poor cat

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 10:50

honestly if you saw yang you would be so upset. I just cant describe this cat well enough. He is so funny. When he is standing and he decides to lay down he just literally flops down the the side. He sleeps with his chin on my DH's shoulder each night. Sometimes if I am lucky, mine! We often wake in the middle of the night with him sitting on our chests staring at us. Once DH opened his eyes and Yang was about an inch away from his face and sneezed right into DH's face!

He loves DS. He sleeps on DS's feet in his bed. When he was younger he did these amazing tricks but during his month long hospital stay he had a major operation and was unable to jump properly after that. He is just so sweet. Really he is a giant fluffball of love he is the funniest, kindest cat. I have had cats all my life, and at the moment I have 10 animals, including Yang and I can easily say I have never known an animal like him.

My neighbour has some sort of odd cat, you can hear her moan if she goes away. Very odd!

Lovemyshoes · 08/03/2009 11:00

yang sounds alot like my youngest cat. I had a tear in my eye reading your op, I was thinking how I would feel if ANYTHING happened to my 3 and remember vividly what is was like when my eldest came in with blood pouring out of her eye, she was very very lucky she kept her eye.

My youngest also likes sleeping on my chest, being cuddled like a baby, sleeping between my ankles, sleeping in the crook of my arm with his head on my arm pit and being stood on when I go to stand on him, he all but smiles, he gets very giddy wraps his paws round my food and chows down whilst kicking with his back legs

orangehead · 08/03/2009 11:00

It does sound like a pellet gun. Hope he ok

Lovemyshoes · 08/03/2009 11:01

round my FOOT not food

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 11:07

Right yang is beautiful - really people ask us how much we paid for him (nothing) and if we let should not let him out for fear he will be stolen. People think he is a girl because he is so pretty although his personality is very dopish and boyish. I say all this to excuse the following link - this is who we say he looks like in our family the white one not the small child

piratecat · 08/03/2009 11:08

he sounds like a lovely trusting boy. unfortuantely there are some vicious stupid people out there. my cat was shot between the eyes with an air rifle at very close range, between the eyes, when i was a girl.

She survived, incredibly. The pellet got lodged in her skull.

I hope when he is more stable the vet will give you more answers, esp with the xray.
xx

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 11:12

piratecat I am sorry about your cat. Can I ask what the wound looked like? Do you remember, I mean, was there a big area around it or just the red bloody bit? And did they have to take the pellet out?

Thank you all for sharing your stories of your animals too.

piratecat · 08/03/2009 11:16

i remember mum saying it was a hole. It was difficult to see, as her fur covered it. She couldn't see or smell as her sinuses we shattered. She did recover her sight, but the vet was amazed that she had been able to drag herself home. She just had huge dilated pupils, and sat there in shock on the mat.

The vet took the pellet out, and it was flattened, wher eit has struck her skull. Poor old Zigs . She was always very moody after that and we were convinced she got headaches!! She lived to 18 tho!!!

differentID · 08/03/2009 11:38

I hate people shooting at cats. How is he now?

bella29 · 08/03/2009 11:40

I would have said pellet gun too.

ow completely, unbelievably awful, yet there are sick people who do this {sad]

Definitely report it.

Sending him all my best wishes for a very speedy recovery x

edam · 08/03/2009 11:42

oh, your poor cat!

People who shoot at cats really are the lowest of the low. Evil little scrotes. And people who are cruel to animals usually go on to be cruel to human beings as well.

hereidrawtheline · 08/03/2009 14:00

he is fine at the moment! There hasnt been any more bleeding thank god and though he has slept a lot when he is awake he is normal and alert. He even just came in and did his calming down job for DS who was in a meldown (DS is being assessed for ASD) He looks rough though, in the face. He just looks really ragged & unwell in the face.
