Is it possible to teach a cat not to nest all the bloody time, because it hurts and I am scratched to ribbons?

Is nesting the right word? When the have thier claws out and are padding you with them, he does it constantly, on everything, even a solid floor, he has very huge claws too and very sharp.

trim his claws

dilemma01 · 04/03/2009 13:28

Really? I thought you could'nt do that with cats, would the vet do it for me?

I'm not sure you can do that with cats? He will only sharpen them again on your sofas.

Just keep picking him off you and putting him down as soon as he does it. He will soon get the picture and stop.

Thanks seeshells, have been doing that, will keep trying, he seems to have his claws out most of the time, even when he is just walking over my lap I get scratched.

You can trim their claws with small nail clippers or ask your vet to do it, especially if you are not sure about where the quick (the sensitive part which would bleed) begins. A scratching post might also help keep them a bit shorter.

It's called kneading & it's what they do to their mother's teats to stimulate milk production. Sign of affection really but yes, it can really hurt

dilemma01 · 04/03/2009 13:38

Oh yes, the word kneading makes sense, I bet he could make the perfect loaf with the amont he does

Is he a kitten? Kittens don't know how/when to withdraw their claws afaik but they learn as they get older.

Or least that as been my exprience with my cats. My cat doesn't claw me now. He claws DH but only because he knows he can get away with it, where I will put him on the floor if he does it to me.

dilemma01 · 04/03/2009 13:45

He is 18 months old, so no not a kitten, I adopted about a week ago, he was more of an outdoor cat, never went to people for fuss, but since I had him, he prefers to stay in and loves a fuss, so perhaps he just needs to learn that it hurts

He's kneading you and getting your lap nice and comfy to sleep on. How could you possibly object to that? You should be flattered.

If you encourage him to go outside his claws will become naturally less sharp and it won't hurt so much. Meanwhile, wear thicker clothes

One of mine is 4 and still does it, despite me pushing him off when he does !

MadreInglese · 04/03/2009 13:50

Our cats are 6 and 11 and still do this! We just get them down off our laps if it gets too much. We have had to trim their claws though, otherwise the carpets and furniture would get trashed.

We use nail clippers, don't cut too far down near the pink bit, just enough to take the sharpness off the claw. It does take two of us to do it though! Or the vet will do it for you if you don't want to. Scratching posts are good too (if they like them, they can be fussy!).

It's not so bad in summer as they go out a lot and scratch off the sharpness on trees and the like, but in winter they're lazy beggars and like to stay inside!

Another of my cats likes to launch herself at your leg and climb up you - fine if her aim's good but if, like the other day, she misses and slides down your leg, then you end up with three long red scratches all down your leg. I do love her, though

Can you get 'Soft Paws' in colours too, MadamDeathStare?

bella29 · 04/03/2009 14:01

x post - no way!!!!!

IotasCat · 04/03/2009 14:41

My cat still does this and he's nine.

Put a blanket on your lap that's what I do.

PinkTulips · 04/03/2009 15:23

everytime he sticks his claws in lift his paws off you and gently say 'no'

it takes a while for it to get through their fluffy little heads but they do eventually figure out that if they don't claw you don't remove their paws.

i have 3 cats that now give me lovely claw free massages
