If your dog has diarrhoea, do you stop feeding them to help them get over it, as with children?

Ours has had loose stools for three days, and has had to be let out with diarrhoea at night. We know he managed to steal some chocolate about four days ago, but nothing bad since. We've fed him carefully but normally for the last 3 days. Any advice, please?

Have no experience with dogs, but with cats - yes - was advised to give just water for 24 hours IIRC. Then dry food for a while. It's hard but the only way. Hope he's better soon.

Yes, starve him for 24 hours, and then start to re feed with rice, scrambled egg and or chicken. do this for 24 hours then re introduced his normal food with the rice, so after 48 hours he should be eating just his normal food IYKWIM.

HTH

Thanks, will do that. Do you think it's something he ate, or do they get DV bugs like humans?

Motherhood good practice for dog-owning, isn't it?

He is currently eating a toy car.

i don't think a toy car will help

Uberelf · 25/02/2009 11:11

Thanks, everyone, I will starve him and then do boiled rice.

yes

we got a pre mixed feed from vet of boiled chicken and fish

vet said DONT give rice

beautifulgirls · 25/02/2009 22:28

Speaking as a vet rice with chicken/fish is usually fine for short periods in a diet like this - using it as a long term diet is a different matter and should be discussed properly with a vet if there are other issues that require a sensitive tummy type of diet.
