Best small dog for a house with 2x adult cats (preferably a breed that doesn't have a strong smell and has a non-shed or low-shed coat)

My 'profile' is as follows

*I have a good sized garden and a large house
*I live in a city
*I have 2 male adult cats - 1 timid, the other boisterous, the dog would have to be very good with them.
*I have 3 children - almost 17, 15 & 6
*I work p/t
*I would be able to take the dog for a daily main walk of around 45mins (not including popping out for toilet visits).
*Ideally it needs to be Westie/JRT sized
*A breed which enjoys games but is quite easily trained and won't chew everything in sight if left to his/her own devices for a couple of hours !

Is there such a creature ? I love the look and personalities of terriers, in particular the fox terrier but from what I have read they are not very good with cats as their instinct is to chase/kill small furry creatures

Dh has just recommended Shih Tzus - they are v sweet, MIL has two and they're real characters and don't bark. The one she keep clipped is the nicest and doesn't shed too badly.

How about a Patterdale? I'd never heard of them until we got our rescue dog, but they're well-behaved and don't chew. 45 mins walk a day is ok, as long as you could give them a long walk (2 hours) at the weekend. Our Patterdale loves cats and likes to lick our guinea pigs' faces

The only problem with them is that they're not easily trained if you're not used to terriers. (It took 3 months to train our little devil darling Weasel).
