Would eating hot food make a dog really really sick?

Hello...I would be grateful for any advice you might be able to give me.

DS dropped his full plate of food as he carried it to the table this evening. As I ran back into the kitchen to get a cloth my dog sneaked in and took advantage of the fact that there was roast beef, tatties and gravy all over the floor!!
Guessing that she was likely to be in trouble the daft dog scoffed the food so quickly and without hardly chewing it - so I wasn't surprised when she vomited it all back up shortly after.

However I am getting a bit worried now because she has kept being sick at least once an hour since. To begin with the vomit was obviously what she had eaten...then it changed to gloopy yellow bile...until the last time a few moments ago which was thick brown liquid.
She is drinking plenty of water and I gave her a handful of dry cornflakes a couple of hours ago. (I was hoping they would maybe soak up the bile in her stomach and thought that they might be better than dry dog biscuits)

She has just been outside and poo'd normally. She doesn't appear to be in pain -whimpering and is moving around ok.

So does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to make her more comfortable this evening? I will call the vet in the morning if she continues to be sick and ask for their opinion. Is it likely that she has done herself some damage internally?

Thanks

Sorry just reread that - it should say 'she doesn't appear in pain, there is no whimpering and she is moving around OK'

was probably too rich for her and that added to the fact that she ate it so quickly may be whats making her sick.
Has she brought the cornflakes up?

bentneckwine1 · 17/02/2009 22:34

Hi fruitshoot

Yeah the cornflakes came up in the last lot about half an hour ago...wasn't going to try her with anything else to eat tonight.

I hadn't thought about the gravy simply being too rich - my son always has his plate swimming in gravy!

I have a tendancy to panic and have by now convinced myself that she has internal burns from the hot gravy - not sure the vet would appreciate being called out if it just turns out that the dog ate too much, too quickly.

yes. hot, lumps, gobbled = copious vomit.

themoon66 · 17/02/2009 22:36

My labrador would throw up after eating anything hot... even one chip would do it. When dogs are sick, they don't do it by halves!

hellymelly · 17/02/2009 22:36

the initial vomiting could have set up irritation that is causing her to vomit again, but if she keeps it up get her to a vet as dehydration can kill.check her gums are wet and that her eyes don't look sunken.I had a cat die very quickly from repeated vomiting ,i was spoon-feeding him with water all night and I took him to the vet first thing in the morning but he died and I have never forgiven myself for not getting him to an out-of-hours vet.Don't leave it if she looks worse.Hope she recovers soon.

DisasterArea · 17/02/2009 22:38

also if the dinner was onyour DS's plate i wouldn't have thought it would be hot enough to really burn. i wouldn't feed her anything else, just make sure there's plenty of water

Disaster & The Moon - thanks for that - you are right about the amount of vomit. I have finished a full bottle of disenfectant and have a pile of sofa cushions that will need the washing machine tomorrow!!

Helly - I am sorry to hear about your cat - that must have been very distressing for you. My dog does not usually drink a great deal of water compared to other dogs I have had in the past - but tonight she has been back and forward to the bowl and taking long drinks each time - so I am happy about that at the moment. She is sleeping (on my bed) now and I have taken the bowl of water upstair with me which I don't normally do.

She hasn't been sick again now for over an hour so hopefully she will sleep it off.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Spoke too soon...she has just been sick again...but back to the foamy yellow bile and only a mouthful as opposed to the huge amounts earlier on.

Mutt, she is a cross breed...people always ask if she is a sausage dog. She resembles them in shape but is a bit taller and a heavier set dog than that.

Thanks

DisasterArea - DS is nearly ten - he was lifting the plates through serving hatch from kitchen to dining area. So food although not scalding hot would be hotter than for a small child.

Is it possible she swallowed a very hot potato in one gulp and burned her osopehegus or her stomach lining?

Ths may be the reason she is vomiting. I suspect she may need the vet pretty quick in the morning if it contines. Is there any blood in the vomit?

My mum used to feed some of her dogs warm food and especially warm tripes so warm food in my experience does no harm but it sounds like this food that was spilled and your dog ate may have been very hot.

Hi ABetaDad - no, there has been no sign of any blood in the vomit. She seems to be quite fine in herself in between vomiting - perky one minute and then literally as sick as a dog. She is sleeping again now.

Mutt, Thanks for your advice - I keep topping up the water bowl - and I am battling with the kitten to leave the dog alone. They usually play so well together - like two kittens really rolling and chasing. The poor kitten is most bemused by all the vomiting - he is watching the dog being sick with such a strange look on his face!!

My gran suggested giving the dog milk rather than water to drink - but I wasn't sure so I have stuck with the fresh water.

Stick with water only. Half digested milk will be a nightmare to clean off bedding!

bentneckwine1 · 17/02/2009 23:32

Lol - hadn't thought about cleaning up milky sick!! My gran just thought about some old wives tale about milk putting a lining on the stomach. I had a funny feeling it might irritate her stomach even more.

The poor wee dog just been sick again. It's as if she is fine when sleeping but I got up to go out of the room and the dog stirred to follow me - then two minutes later she was sick.

Going to switch off all the lights and laptop now and hopefully she will settle for the evening and will maybe be a bit better in the morning.

Thank you to you all for taking the time to reply...x

xx hope she feels better tomorrow

DisasterArea · 18/02/2009 08:32

how's dog today?

bentneckwine1 · 18/02/2009 08:53

Morning

Well the dog was sick at around 3am this morning but has not been sick since. She had a huge drink of water just before 8am and 'touch wood' so far seems to be keeping that down so hopefully that is her over the worst of it - however if she is sick again I will call the vet and ask for their opinion.

Thanks to everyone for your interest and advice - stopped me from panicking too much!!

Just to update - the dog has been sick twice this morning so I called the vet and explained what had happened.

As soon as I mentioned that there were roast tatties on the plate of dropped food the vet said that it was possibly stuck!! Apparently they had a dog before that stole a roast tattie, ate it whole and then was sick because it was lodged and the dog couldn't clear it. That dog needed an operation to remove the stuck tattie.

I have an appointment for 4pm for my dog at the vet - hopefully they will manage to sort her out without needing an operation. I will let you all now later.

Thanks Again

OMG - bentneck - your poor dog and poor you/

I followed this with interest but was convinced it would turn out to be nothing but a greedy dog but abetadad was right, wasn't he? i really hope it isn't stuck and she doesn't need an op....

Please keep us updated.

bentneckwine1 · 18/02/2009 13:16

lisalisa - thanks for your message - typical that I was so busy worrying about internal burns from the hot gravy that I had forgotten to panic about stuck tatties!!

Will keep you updated...x

ABetaDad · 18/02/2009 14:28

lisalisa + bentneckwine1 - never heard of spuds getting stuck in a dog. The vet could well be right though. I was thinking that a really hot spud might have burned the osophegus or stomach lining so much that the poor dog was bleeding from the stomach wall but I do not think that now.

Spuds - absolutley lethal things. A spud can kill a cow if it swallows it whole.

Good luck at the vets. Do let us know how you get on.

bentneckwine1 · 18/02/2009 14:52

ABetaDad - interesting that you should say that about potatoes being so dangerous. I spoke to the vet nurse and explained about the dropped plate and that the dog had been sick since eating the food. She asked what was on the plate - was it spicy like curry or such like? As soon as I mentioned roast tatties she was quite firm about the dog being seen today, she also said that I had to make sure the vet knows it was roast tatties when I arrive. Apparently she could remember this one instance when a dog stole a roast tattie and ended up really sick - and it turned out the tattie was stuck and had to be removed by operation.

I had boiled the potatoes and then cooked them off in hot oil to crisp them...cos that is the way my son loves them.

Just been for a wee walk around the block with the dog, she has wee'd a few times so that was good. But she did the tiniest of poo's - almost like a rabbit dropping!! I had to search on the grass to find it.

Just leaving now for the vet so will let you all know how she gets on. Thanks.
