Would like views on DP's opinion re. puppy

So I would like a King Charles Spaniel puppy. Have done for ages and researched local breeders, priced up cost etc etc.

DCs, of course, would love one also.

DP however has other views. He thinks we shouldn't have one because:-

a) we have a cat, she wouldn't like it
b) we live in a three bed-semi, too small for a dog
c) he can't stand pee/poo smells
d) he works FT and I work 4 days a week

To these I can reply:-

a) CKCS are well-known for mixing well with other animals, I've had dogs and cats before and they've fought at first but then get used to each other
b) OK so our home is not huge, we have a far sized garden though and loads of placed around for walking
c) pee/poo is only during puppy stages, and I would clean it up!
d) I only work 5 mins away from home so when I am in work, I will be home during lunch etc and my parents live around the corner so will be able to pop over regularly to check

Do you think I am fighting a losing battle?? I think I am getting somewhere and then he comes up with some other feeble excuse!

Can you give some some good come backs to throw at him???!!

tbh a dog is a huge commitment and unless both of you are in total agreement then I think you're storing up trouble.

Although if he does want one really but is thinking up potential problems then the scenario you've painted for looking after the dog should work out fine. Assuming he won't be on his own for longer than a couple of hours to start with.

Sorry but to be honest I think d would be the decider for me. Doesn't sound like anyone is home enough for a young puppy.

to be honest I think you need to be home more than that for a puppy - wouldn't be too bad for an older dog that is used to it - but not good for a young dog.

I'd agree that d is tricky for a puppy, my pups 5mths and I wouldn't yet leave him that long. Do you have long holidays or can you work at home for a while when its a puppy? That could help. Or perhaps look for a rescue dog who might be ok being left for longer.
I would agree thata-c is ok, my MIL had a KC and he was fine with their cat and other dogs, and she lived in a 2 bed house, hose size doesn't really matter though as long as they get good walks. THink you do need to win your dh around if its going to be the family dog though, you might need him to clear up after it sometimes and walk it too.
pets are so good for children and KC are lovely dogs.
