What's the ££ cost of owning a cat?

For ages now I've been thinking of getting a cat - well a pair of cats - but before I go ahead (and persuade dh), what are the actual costs incurred in owning a cat?

VET UK- go have a look everybody its soooo much cheaper than the vets AND if your pet needs perscription only meds you can get perscription off vet and send to vet uk and they will perscribe

The two cats we've been offered no one's quite sure how old they are - would a vet's guess be good enough for insurers?

I have a throw I can put over the leather sofa, although dh will grumble. I know the dcs would love a pair of cats but dh is wary, knowing he would have to deal with most of the 'presents'!

Madwife, a vet can charge for a prescription though. They can still be cheaper (I used a similarr one for my dogs incontinence meds) but it depends how much you get stung for the script from the vet amd how quickly you need the meds to start with.

A vets guess is good enough for insurers yes, my old boy I adopted at middle aged and they gave an age range of 8 - 10 years and that was fine for the insurance, I just picked a date within that range as his age and have made claims and no problems or questions.

sad to say cats scratch up your home.I have 2 cats that i love dearly.both have been nuetered.but even though we have cat posts and cat nip on them they prether our carpet.i still love them but i get annoyed when i see more cat scratches on my carpet. They both have the best of food wont eat any thing but felix in gravy.i or whiskas. they love tuna tried other cheap versions of that but they turn thier noses at it.My old cat is nearly 16 he has gone skinny and looks rough but he eats like a horse. Its a big responsabiliy .But they reward you by loving you and u love them.

princessmel · 16/02/2009 09:32

My cat has never scratched our leather sofas. I WAS worried about this actually! But he has done teeny scratches in the carpet upstairs. But tbh with 2 dc's our carpet isn't perfect now anyway.

Really pissed off neighbours when it poos in their garden all of the time (can you tell I am bitter).

twinklytoes · 16/02/2009 21:15

so glad to have come across this thread. we are re-homing two sisters next week, so its good to see a breakdown of costs.

fishie · 16/02/2009 21:18

tray + litter = not much

your cat shitting in your neighbours' gardens = irreplaceable loss of goodwill and potential catsitters.

i love you paddingtonbore and newatthis1981.

get insurance. my cat is diabetic and farking eyewateringly expensive.

newatthis1981 · 17/02/2009 09:57

it's nice to be loved and even better not to have the faintest idea why!

i agreed with the whole 'could be putting money away instead of insurance' thing but think of it like this, car insurance is crazy expensive but we all get it - believe me your cat could cost you far more than a car crash!

never mind all this have you went on and on at your partner for long enough for him to give in? i had to work on mine for 2 whole days before we got the guinea pigs :-)

No cats Newatthis , the two we were offered are now going to the owner's extended family instead and I think dh secretly relieved.

don't worry who ever said nagging doesn't work has never been consistant in their approach :-) try try again! take him on a little trip to your local shelter once he sees the big sad eyes you'll have one or five in no time

You should watch this before committing yourself!

That's brilliant Flight

In the same way that dh was a bit meh about having kids & is now a fully paid up member of the proud-fathers club, I think dh would be the same about cats - so I haven't given up Newatthis, a visit to the cat shelter could be a cunning plan.

i have more cunning plans! how about going out getting two and saying they are strays and you started feeding them that morning and now they wont go away! - keep them in the shed for a couple of days or somewhere he wont look (not the washer though just incase!) bring them out a hour after he gets home for two days, crack open the cat nip and he'll think they're more entertaining than your children - hey presto they're intergrated into the family and he wont have the heart to upset you or the kids

Heated · 17/02/2009 20:45

That's Machiavellian, it's evil...I like it!

Unfortunately dh public spirited enough to post 'Found' notices on every lamp-post; I don't think he'd ever forgive me!

but it's my birthday in a few months so I'm prepared to wait

friend says cost 800pound in a year. they go holiday loads so cat goes cattery. and being femail does get loads treatments. i dont know much about cat. i think cat originally cost over 100 pounds 10years ago.

newatthis1981 · 17/02/2009 20:50

good thinking - less manipulating but again one hint is not enough! good luck
