Bought 2 Guinea Pigs today!!

We brought home our two new guinea pigs today grin both blokes but I was assured by the shop that it wouldn't be a problem.

So, got them in their cage...the smallest of the two just follows the other one around like a shadow. If the bigger one gets a drink, small one pushes him out of the way and gets a drink...if big one goes to food bowl, little one rushes over and sticks his nose in the bowl too...if big one goes to bed, little one is hot on his heels it's so comical and cute to watch!

But, there has been some "purring" noises coming from big one, any reason for concern?

The little one squeaks and chatters constantly and the big one had a mad five minutes where he leapt into the air (all fours off the ground!), dived off his platform, kicked sawdust everywhere and then darted in his house before doing it all over again!

So are my new furry friends normal or have I picked the two nuttiest ones they had?

Congratulations on getting your pigs - they will give you so much enjoyment! Are they house pigs? We have house pigs and they each have their own personality and habits. Don't know about the purring but if the little pig is not upset then I would have thought it was fine.

Yes they'll be living in the house. The biggest of the two seems to be bullying the smaller one a bit today, chasing him around and trying to mate with him! Pets at home assure me that this is normal I'm keeping an eye on things.

DS wants to call the little black one "Zombie", that will go down well at the vets reception room

hi!
I have two guinea pigs, mine are girls though.
is the one purring also kind of swaying his bottom from side to side ? if so, this is called rumblestrutting and its his way of showing he is the dominant one . guinea pigs would naturally be in groups in the wild and a pecking order is always decided lol

the other thing you mention, where the guinea pig kind of jumps up and almost looks like its having a fit lol is called 'popcorning' and its what they do when they are in high spirits and happy! try giving them a paper bag or a box with doorways cut out, they will love it and probably popcorn like mad!!

We have two boys as well SA - trying to mate is common amongst boys!!

About once a month mine have a ding dong because one wants to and the other doesnt - I had to seperate them on one occasion!

Dont worry about the purring just leave them alone to settle in for a day or so.

Jumping up in the air is called popcorning!

What cage have you got for them? Boys generally get bigger than girls so hopefully you have a Nero 4.

We have one of these which I am proud to say I built myself! 2 grids by 4 grids My boys are huge!!

Hi
I've finally given in to the children and have agreed they can have 2 GP"s.
The problem is I've never had animals like this before so don't have a clue
Would be very grateful of any advice re:cage, type of GP'S,food, where to keep them,do I get 2 ect.
Do you think gp's are easier than rabbits?I'm really not keen on anything so they will have to be easy to look after.Luckily I have three very keen and willing children
Thanks in advance
