Nipping Puppy

Hiya,
Our puppy is about 4 1/2 months old, and is great (loves to play, good walker on a lead normally etc).

However, she seems to be trying to exert dominence over our dc in that whilst they sit on the sofa the puppy is really good and generally ignores them, but the second the dc get on the floor, she tried to nip them.

We know this is "normal" puppy behaviour, and is something we have to ride out, we are just looking for some tips to get the puppy used to the dc being on the floor.

Thanks

Hello. My puppy is 8 months and it took her a while to stop nipping the DDs. She never really nipped DH or I so think she just saw the DDs as puppies too. We worked really hard with them to push her to one side if she nipped and ignore her. I told them to yelp loudly if she nipped and I would make a big fuss of nursing the 'wound' and ignore the puppy. She got lots of attention for playing without nipping and ignored for nipping. By 5 months she had stopped nipping completely. I think the important thingis for her to understand that it hurts when she does it.

Good Luck . What sort of puppy is she?

She is a Jack Russell. She only tries to nip the dc, so similar to you, we think it is her way of trying to play with them (though last night she dropped her toy to go try to nip them, but dd was shouting!).

Ours give the puppy a quick tap on the nose and then ignore her and it works - although it is only DS she wants to eat it seems!

Ummm.....seems like puppys enjoy the taste of children then!

Puppies are smart, they quickly realise that nipping equals being put outside the fun. ie. ignored. They learn to play nice with humans to get attention. They also learn that biting is bad it hurts and humans don't like it.

Have fun with your puppy
