Do puppies lose their "milk teeth"?

DD was playing with our puppy today and said that she thought that Daphne had lost a tooth. Since DD has recently lost a tooth this has reinforced the bond between her and the dog but I have to confess that I have not got a clue if dogs loose teeth.

MN will know, I thought so here I am ready to be educated. (or laughed at for being ridiculous)

Yes they do, those sharp little needles fall out and are replaced by big teeth.

DisasterArea · 03/02/2009 18:18

yse but you probably won't have to find it and put it under its pillow. i think they usually get swallowed.
mine is nearly 5 months and has big new front ones but not lost the pointy side ones yet.

Yes they do - which I was not at all aware of until we got our pup!

Phoenix · 03/02/2009 18:19

Yes you'll find them all over

MmeLindt · 03/02/2009 18:21

Had a good look, seems like she has already lost a few.

AIBU to be sad that I missed her first tooth falling out? We celebrated DD's first wobbly tooth falling out.

Do I need to put a Bonio under her pillow from the tooth fairy?

I did! The Bonio didn't last a second though.

MadameCastafiore · 04/02/2009 13:53

When does this happen - Freddie is 3.5 months and I haven't seen anything lying around yet!

My vet told me about 16 wks onwards but not to expect to find any teeth (or promise the kids the dog tooth fairy) as they tend to swallow them.

With my old dog, I only ever found one tooth.

Do they stop chewing everything once they've finished losing them ? My old dog wasn't much of a chewer but this one is terrible.

pania · 04/02/2009 15:18

We never thought about milk teeth until our puppy spat one out in front of us one day.
I wish we'd kept it now.

As for kittens' milk teeth... they must be abolutely minute, mustn't they! Especially those little front teeth.

Saltire · 04/02/2009 15:18

We weren't aware of this until we actually got a pup. He didn't swallow his though, no he spat them all over the floor!
Obviously didn't have the same taste as tights or socks or skirting boards!

Saltire · 04/02/2009 15:19

countingto10 - if ours is anything to go by, then the answer to your question about chewing is NO. Ours chews far more than he used to. He has had tights, socks, door frame, skirting board, plaster off the wall, a socket off the wall, a wasp - I could go on but I would take up the whole thread

MmeLindt · 04/02/2009 17:39

Our pup is 4mths old and not much of a chewer tbh. She chews her toys and will nibble socks (and my best Bravissimo knickers, the little sod, not the cheap 4pack knickers from M&S) but she is not really destructive. I hope that doesn't change.

my dog ingested most of his baby teeth
