First night with puppy...

Ok have our puppy for first night. Our friends (puppy's mother owners) said to ignore her crying in the night. Well, she fell asleep on my lap and I put her in the crate (with comfort towel from friends) and she started majorly crying and throwing herself against the bars.

What do we do overnight? I'm not sure I can ignore that! She has just eaten and seems ok, but craving to be with us - fine at the moment, but what is the procedure for the first night? One book I read said to sleep near puppy to reassure her, but friends said to try and ignore.

Personally I left all mine on their own from the first night in a crate with towels etc.

Put a radio on low volume in the room where she is and leave her to it.

I know it's heartbreaking to hear but start as you mean to go on. Our puppy cried for about an hour to start with and then again for about 10 mins during the night- the first night we got her. But then the next night nothing and then she was fine.

I agree. By the third night it was silent. Make sure you get up very early though and dont leave until as late as you can.

Thanks - I'll brave it. Another question - do I have the crate, which is a bit big, shut and have half bedding half newspaper or leave it open with newspaper in the kitchen and just shut the kitchen door?

shut the crate.
We had horrendous howling for 2 nights and then suddenly he was fine.

you do need to leave them within reason
If pup is in danger of hurting itself you need to make sure crate is padded
Good luck they do settle quickly
Whatvpuppy have you got?

Piffle · 31/01/2009 20:43

I'd advise against having toilet area in the crate
We had crate door open to small confined area with paper to allow pup to soil out of their bed

She's a mix. Mother is springer, father is lab/collie/staffie.

If I leave crate door open she'll have access to whole kitchen.

our puppy who is now 5 months cried for 7 nights we closed the crate door for about 3 weeks then let him have the door open for about a week then we just got rid of it and he was fine

you need to ignore the crying or you will end up with pup upstairs with you

good luck

She did well. We left the crate door open and the kitchen door shut. She was really freaked out with the crate door shut and would throw herself against the bars. She cried for 30mins and we then went back in to loa dishwasher etc.. she went bck into her bed (crate) and we left. She was silent for 10 mins and then we couldn't hear her in our room so I'm not sure how much noise she made.

When I went in this morning she was quite wimpery when she came up to me, but has now had a good play session and asleep again. I think she did really well.

She is gorgeous.

that was really good
our pup is nearly 6 months and wimpers when we come in if we go out without him after a quick fuss he is fine
