my 9 month old lab sleeps so much. is he a lazy sod? or is he getting too much exercise? or is this what they're meant to do when not out walking? he's as bouncy as ever and raring to go when we take him out but at home he just flops.

My lab is 1 year old and mainly sleeps when she's not out walking - perks up for a game of fetch in the late evening, then zonks out again for the night.

brimfull · 28/01/2009 22:23

It;s because they can't read or mumsnet-might as well have a kip!

hatwoman · 28/01/2009 22:26

you should see him now. he is lying on dh (who is lying on the sofa). he's lying on his back with his legs akimbo. he looks ridiculous.

lol, hatwoman - my nearly 9 month old is a lazy sod too. He loves his walks but at home he just flops out and snores

Newpup - what about your lab?

bella29 · 28/01/2009 22:27

x post hatwoman - take a photo!!!!

bella29 · 28/01/2009 22:28

PS I assume it's the dog with legs akimbo, or is dh trying to tell you something?

My 6 yr old yellow lab likes to get at least 20 hours of ZZZs in every 24. I call him Slobbus McDoggus, the snoozehound. It's a dog's life, I tell you...

hatwoman · 29/01/2009 11:24

I wonder if it's to do with their origins - I think any animal that hunts and eats meat expends huge amounts of energy when actually hunting and then basically sleeps all the rest of the time, to conserve energy. I think lions sleep something like 20+ hours a day.

foragers, on the other hand, like my gerbils, never stop. They're up at all hours, burrowing, scrabbling, and doing their thing.

7mth great swiss mountain dog sleeps loads - the lazy bugger!!

and the snoring he does -has my 3 in fits of laughter

Geepers · 29/01/2009 20:19

My 15 month old spaniel is either out walking, or asleep, and not much in between. He is snoring away as I type.

slackrunner · 29/01/2009 20:23

Same with my lab (14 months) - but he does get a ton of exercise.

Goober · 29/01/2009 20:24

4 year old Boxer will go for a manic run in the morning and one hellofa walk until exhausted. She will then sleep ALL day!

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2009 21:04

mine is snoring and farting at my feet now as i type

hatwoman · 29/01/2009 21:07

ok so if I turn up at the vets saying "he's very sleepy" I'll be laughed out of the room...good.

Here's a photo of my (then) 2 year old lab

Energetic dog

Haribosmummy · 29/01/2009 21:11

I took the self same dog for a 10-11 mile walk today and the mutt isn't speaking to me now!

Labradors love their food but are pretty lazy at heart!!

And that's why we love them

hatwoman · 29/01/2009 21:25

I recognise that pose...

I'm sure I read that dogs sleep on average for 18 hours a day.

Mine (springer) sleeps for good chunks of the day provided ds1 isn't around to poke him awake or generally annoy him.

Sleeps deeply from about 7pm until we get up (7am ish).

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2009 21:51

awwwwwwwwwwww how cute is he

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/01/2009 22:00

heres my 7mth

not a great picture - just took it tonight on phone camera

he sleeps with his half chewed duck (was headless after a few mins ) and yellow banana

RumMum · 30/01/2009 16:36

my 4 year old Border Collie is the same.. runs like crazy when we're out but sleeps when we're in doors... wouldn't have her any other way!

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 30/01/2009 16:39

Mine won't even bother getting up to go out for a wee if it's raining in the morning but at 7pm, come rain or shine, he trots off to the back of the garden to bark his head off!

mysterymoniker · 30/01/2009 16:44

21mo springer sleeps every non-walking minute of the day and night

does get between 2-5 hours of outside world each day though, much of which 'socialising' with my work dogs
