Getting rid of cat wee - for good!!

Right, I am deterimined now to get this sorted. 2 out of 3 of my cats have just gone to a new home and third cat will be restricted (for now) to the non-carpet areas of the house - with a cat flap to go outside.

I MUST get it all properly cleared up - no marks, no smells, no germs.

I know you are not meant to use disinfectants on areas like this because it will make the cat want to go there more because of the ammonia. BUT..does this still apply if the cat won't have contact with it for a while?

I am thinking about pulling the carpet up, and using something strong on the floorboards and under side of the carpet? But will this be ok? Or will my cat just want to wee there when she does eventually have access to the rest of the house again? Length of time depends on how happy she is shut in these areas, and how much attention we manage to give her out there. And how long it takes us to completly sort the carpet out.

We have bought a black light, although as you will see from my other thread it hasn't impressed me yet. And some "urine off" spray that was recomended on here.

Any ideas? PLEASE help me to combat this problem!

We used 'simple solutions stain & odour remover' when one of my cats kindly weed in the car. Had to treat it twice, but the smell was eradicated. Very easy to use, not very expensive and you can use it on quite a few surfaces. Bought it at a pet shop.

You could try surgical spirit (used generously) We used to have a really poorly cat and that seemed to work along with vigourous scrubbing with fairy liquid. Hope this helps x

chloejessmeg · 28/01/2009 21:19

Yes thank you.

Thinking I might give her another chance before shutting her in part of the house. Now that the other cats have gone, the problem might solve itself. Still want to clean it though!

A solution of biological detergent and water can neutralise the smell as it breaks down the fats in the urine which create the odour. It also discourages them from wetting there again.

chloejessmeg · 28/01/2009 21:30

That is what we have been using lubyloo. Hasn't worked so far but we haven't pulled up the carpet recently and done under there.

Hard to know what to do:

  • Shut the cat in non carpet areas while we spend weeks getting rid of the smell and hope that we can re-introduce her.
  • Clean it all up now and just hope that now the other cats have gone, she just doesn't wee on the carpet anymore. The main problem was the other cats and she wouldn't share a litter tray etc which she can obviously now have all to herself (we tried even with 6 litter trays)

She already (2 hours after they have gone) seems so much more relaxed. She is just relaxing on the sofa with me, instead of worrying about what the other 2 are doing.

The biological detergent seemed to work for us - sorry it isn't doing so for you.

Hopefully now the other cats have gone she won't wet anymore.

chloejessmeg · 28/01/2009 21:40

It might do the job when we pull up the carpet and clean underneath etc.

Think I might shut her in there tonight, and I will pull the carpet up before bed so it can at least start drying out.

WELLL, I pullled up the carpet last night and used the urine off spray - bloody expensive too and used most of a bottle. Left to dry overnight and shut cat in kitchen. Came down this morning, cat ran straight out of kitchen and wee'd on the carpet . It was like she had been saving it all night. BUT she doesn't have a litter tray yet - has been using outside (we have good reason for this). So today going to pets at home to stock up on cat litter etc and hope this solves the problem.

Anybody know where I can buy more urine off - in shops not online? Got the last lot from Amazon but would ideally like some more today?

Anybody have any other sugestions?

On the urine off products it says
DO NOT scrub the area as it just spreads out the cat wee. And DO NOT use any water or anything until you have first removed the cat urine and smell etc so you know it isn't going to spread it. I have already done both of these - so have I ruined it?

The area still smells, despite using the products on both sides of the carpet. It does say it might take a few applications though if the problem has been there for a while.

you need to do the BIOLOGICAl detergent, in warm water - scrub this, rinse, let it dry - then dab on surgical spirits. That should do it. I wouldnt bother with any of those urine off type products, they often contain stuff that attracts the cat back to pee.

Have you found out WHY your cat is weeing indoors? Been to the vets to make sure there are no physical problems? There is a product called feliway which can make a cat feel more chilled out and less likely to piddle.

LucyEllensmummy · 29/01/2009 21:42

Ah, just read that the two other cats have gone - were they a problem for her? Or might she miss them? Eitehr way i think feliway is the way to go - you can get diffusers that you plug in like air fresheners and refils, you can get them from your vet, or pet world type places. You can also buy a spray, but i would only recomend this if she sleeps in a basket and you can spray the bedding. Its good stuff.

chloejessmeg · 29/01/2009 21:57

Have tried bio washing detergent. Used it on the whole carpet in the vax, as well as on my hands and knees!

Yes, the other 2 were a problem for her. To be honest, I thought the problem would go when they left. They have only been gone 24 hours though so still hope yet.

Have been using feliway for a good year or so too.

Honestly, rehoming the other 2 were a very last option and we have tried most products.

The Urine off spray is meant to be very good for breaking down the urine and not attracting the cats to go back there. Is is about £15 a bottle though . It definatly seems to have made a difference to the smell though, which is a first. But smell hasn't GONE, just improved.

Chloe I'll try again!

Have you tried:

'Simple Solutions stain & odour remover' ?

It's a product name (in case that wasn't clear!)

It's really good, we've used it successfully. You can buy it from Pets at Home and it's very reasonable - I saw a big bottle for about £5.

Good luck

soon2befamilyof4 · 10/02/2009 00:15

Nelly, its chloe here. I bought 2 bottles today in PAH although it was just over £5 for a very small bottle. But what I am confused about - is it says it is for cleaning out the cat litter tray with? Bit worried it will attract the cat back there if I use it on the carpet? It is odor removal - but if you read the instructions it talks about cleaning the tray with it - doesn't mention carpet?
