I have recently discovered in dd's silly facts book that cats don't like lemons???!!! So maybe get a lemony spray and spray your surfaces.

Or kick yer cats out yer kitchen.

PLant sprayers - works quickly, and then you can ever after resort to just hissing and clapping hands at them. it does depend on the determination of the cats however!!

Mine used to do it when he was that age. I just kept putting him on the floor and saying "no" and he soon got the hint!

i agree with pixel

I wish I knew - will try the lemon thing. I'm in this ridiculous Catch 22 whereby Cat A is hungry, jumps on the side to tell me he's hungry, I push him off, he jumps back on until I feed him, thus rewarding him for jumping up and making sure he knows to do it again. If I don't feed him, he just keeps jumping up. ARGH!

Can you put the food in a lower cupboard? I think one reason my cat doesn't jump up on the worktop when he is hungry is because he knows there is no food there (well none of his anyway). Instead he sits on the floor by the bottom cupboard and I swear he says "more, more" .

Try putting double sided sellotape over the worktops for a few days - may sound awkward in practice, you could try putting a grid of tape onto slabs of card and laying them on the worktops when you're not there.

Cats hate sticky things. Double sided sticky tape is also a good thing to place onto furniture corners if cats are scratching there.

Poor wee kittens getting their paws (and bum fur!!!) stuck to sellotape . An effective deterrent!!!

rolandbrowning · 24/02/2009 13:27

Mine know I don't want them to do it, and will shout if I see them doing it, but they just do it when I'm not there. I might try the sellotape thing though, sounds like a good idea LittleWeePickle, because sometimes it really makes me feel like getting rid of them, especially when I've just cleaned the kitchen. Good luck onlywantsone!

Good thread - I'm having a NIGHTMARE with this at the moment, and my cats are middle-aged. It;s got much worse since we moved house, as the kitchen is the only child-free sanctuary for the cats. They know not to jump up on the work tops when I'm not around, but as soon as I'm not looking the work tops are covered in their horrid little muddy paw prints. I am SO fed up with them.

nnibnabs · 24/02/2009 15:45

Sheets of tin foil laid out over the work tops. They jump up, get scared stiff with noise/sight of the silver stuff. It does work, but gotta keep it up there while your not around until they get the message.

I've tried it all, including tinfoil (no luck) and the only thing that works for my cats is the plant sprayer. if you do it consistently for a week or so they will stop, and if they ever 'forget' I only have to reach for the spray and they quickly get off.

Best of luck!

I have been trying to get this licked with my cat for the last 10 years.. the ONLY option in my house is to clean down the sideboards before getting any food out everytime, and putting all food away
