What should I feed my puppy

I have 13 wk old goldendoodle puppy. He will be a large dog. I'm feeding him Beta puppy atm but he has a permanent upset tummy (lots of "Mr Whippy" and worse). The amount coming out seems dispropartionate to what's going in IYSWIM.

I don't want to start trying all sorts of different food that might make it worse. My old dog was fed on Bakers Complete after many trials etc (and skin allergies) and really loved it.

So any recommendations would be gratefully appreciated. BTW vet practice has given me a sample of Hills (which I think they dish out to every new puppy/kitten).

I have had the puppy for two weeks and he has been regularly wormed, the last time being over the last three days.

I'd go for Hills Large Breed Puppy - then onto Adult when old enough. Best quality, balanced nutritionally (esp important in Large Breed dogs), is complete (so needs nothing else) & gives less poos per pound, IYSWIM.

Just my opinion, HTH xx

My top 3 foods are Hills, Royal Canin and James Wellbeloved (not necessarily in that order!). James Wellbeloved is supposed to be better for dogs with sensitive stomachs, and the better quality foods tend to have less cheap 'fillers' so, as caspercat says, you should get less poo.

Also important to feed a large breed food as this will control your pup's growth rate and help prevent strain on his developing joints.

Whatever you switch to remember to do it gradually over a few days to allow the pup's digestive system time to adjust, although it sounds quite upset at the moment anyway!

HTH

I second bella's top 3, and have also heard good things about Arden Grange

Bakers is notoriously full of additives

MissusLindt · 26/01/2009 12:19

We have Hills as well, and our puppy is thriving on it.

My vote is for Burns Dog Food - it's in a few pet shops but we always buy it online. My dogs (labs and goldens) have all thrived on. In fact my parents second hand golden and my husbands 7 year old lab improved enormously when they were changed onto it. It has no additives and is a very simple complete food.

I had a bit of a thing about the animal testing that was done by most of the major dog food manufacturers. They do some awful things to dogs to see whether or not their food particular food makes them heal faster, grow faster, behave differently etc. I didn't want to buy from these manufacturers and went for a producer that doesn't animal test and makes good, simple food dogs.

daisydotandgertie · 26/01/2009 14:41

Oh yes - I meant to add that Burns are quite keen on poo - the getting it right sort of keen.

Their website is www.burnspet.co.uk if you want any more info.

Thanks everyone - a friend recommended James Wellbeloved or Burns as well. I'm seeing the vet again on Friday for last jab and microchip so will have a final word with her to make sure everything is ok - I am concerned he is growing very quickly (I think he is going to be the size of small pony ).

It's a bit of a minefield out there on the food front!!!!

Burns is excellent - we saw a huge reduction in 'output' when we started using it.

ohdearwhatamess · 26/01/2009 19:04

Burns is highly recommended for dogs with delicate digestive systems. Also results in a much reduced volume of poo.

I'm reliably informed that Chappie, although made with crap, can work wonders where all other dog foods have failed. Tis very cheap too.

worley · 26/01/2009 19:08

my old boss used to swear by chappie for his whippit, and he was a vet. he did complain it made his dogs wee smell though!!

fairimum · 26/01/2009 21:49

get a stock of prokolin from vet uk website - we always have some on hand for poorly tummies - it is just a probiotic, but we always ended up paying £26 for a vet consultation only to be told to give them chicken and rice and prokolin for 3 days and if no improvement to go back - if tummy clears after 3 days keep giving the prokolin and very gradually start adding normal food back into the rice, take at least a couple of days to change over!
good luck

My pup had colitis on Hills so we switched to Burns mini bites for puppies. I wholly recommend it.

countingto10 · 28/01/2009 10:27

I have started switching to Burns. Hopefully his tummy will settle down soon - 12 piles yesterday which is more than me and his little tummy can bear. Fortunately he is still his bouncy self and is drinking well.

My local pet shop is very kindly giving me a refund on the remains of the bag of Beta that I already have

12

Hope he feels (and poos) better soon.

countingto10 · 29/01/2009 13:03

Two days into gradually introducing Burns and his tummy is settling down (only two poos so far today (sorry TMI))

Thank you for all your recommendations.

My dog has James Wellbeloved, or did until today. He still does at least three mahoosive shits a day.

As of today I will be giving him Royal Canine. Should dogs shit three times a day? God I hate dogs. I wish he'd get run over

ohdearwhatamess · 29/01/2009 13:53

Mine does one a day, unless he's supplemented his food with something unsuitable (dead rabbits etc).

Think he did 2 or 3 a day when he was a young puppy though.

countingto10 · 29/01/2009 13:59

I don't remember my old dog pooing so much and really hoping this one is going to settle down soon.

What with my washing machines packing up, a 4 yr old still pooing in his pants and in the last ten minutes (between manually draining my w/machines) my dear puppy has rolled in a pile of poo that he had just done (no 3 of the day) and I have had to bath him

Please tell it was a good idea to get a puppy.
