Is dry food or wet food better for cats - is there a definitive answer on this?

Please?

Cats are about 6 months old.

Dry food helps clean their teeth (to some extent) and usually works out cheaper than wet food.

Little furries in my house love their wet food, though, so I give them a little in addtion to their dry food.

do you brush their teeth?

pollycazalet · 22/01/2009 10:23

No I don't brush their teeth! Should I?

everyone should, but it's even more important if they are going to have a wholly 'wet' diet

tips

I think a mix of both is best as they both have health benefits

Our vet advised me to stop giving our (male) cat dry food (only having a little each day) as it aggrevated (sp) his urinary tract inflammation which is particularly nasty and can be fatal. He said it acted as a sponge drawing all the water from his stomach. Since giving him only wet food (and adding a few drops of extra water to it too) he hasn't had an uti since. It may be a coincidence but I don't want to risk it.

I have a hard enough time getting dd to do her teeth, the cat will just have to manage without that kind of fuss

Lovesdogsandcats · 23/01/2009 11:12

Best of both worlds, wet pouch food with a small handful of dry over the top - this is like eating a prey animal, wet flesh and crunchy bones.

piratecat · 23/01/2009 11:14

lol @ lurker's cat's teeth neglect [wink}

if i could i would give my 2 cats dry only. the younger one is exclusively on dry atm as has had runny bum even on a bit of kitten tinned.

my older one has a mix of both.

ScummyMummy · 23/01/2009 11:17

I think it depends on the cat. One of my cats has to have only wet food because he had a blocked bladder and dry food can apparently be bad for him. Leads to build up of crystals in his urine or something.

pollycazalet · 23/01/2009 12:21

Thanks - am giving them a mix at the moment but had hoped to move them onto just dry .

Will consult vet I think.

don't consult vet-will try and flog you stuff they sell.

Honestly wet and dry is best. You can get some dry with cranberry in for urine probs, James Wellbeloved is one of them - they will send you samples if you email and ask.

i have found the best dry food is either Hills Science or Royal Canin, both from pets At home, again both these companies will send samples and often Pets at Home will give you some samples if you ask.

I thought dry was deffo best. Wet food has caramel in it doesnt it to rot their teeth.

uptomyeyes · 23/01/2009 14:28

My 15 year old make has had dry all his life and seems pretty perky on it. If, in an emergency, i offer him wet food - even tuna or chicken, he turns his nose up at it.

uptomyeyes · 23/01/2009 14:28

...male not make!
