Dog owners: How on EARTH do you keep your uose clean?

Cause I am sick of sweeping, hoovering, wiping etc etc.

I have a dyson vacuum, a dyson handheld and a sweeping brush and they all get used every day. The handheld and sweeping brush many times a day. We have laminate floors downstairs and I can not beleive the pile of crap and hairs we colect on a daily basis.

We have a black lab, he gets groomed weekly and is not particilularly (sp) long haired. We have had him since November.

So my question is, is there something I should be doing to him/giving him to stop shedding? Is there a wonderous hoover on the market that I don't know about? Or do I just lower my standards and live among dog hair till the end of his days?

dog hairs have killed the Dyson

We have floorboards and quarry tiles on the ground floor. Have an eco mop that's quite good at getting dog hairs...

DP brushes them every other day or so...

I just found a dog hair in my fridge

My mother, when faced with 3 dogs and a perpetually dirty house, used to leave the hoover permanently plugged in in the hall. Thus looking like she was aware it needed cleaning, and indeed was just about to do it, had the visitor not chosen that moment to knock on the door. A route it seems many of us might adapt?

georgimama · 21/01/2009 16:13

Yes, my lab killed the Dyson (Animal). Henry seems to be coping better, well, they are used by builders to vacuum up rubble.

I want a Roomba! I want one!

CountessDracula · 21/01/2009 16:21

we have wooden floors and a cleaner twice a week
that does the trick

ilovemydogandMrObama · 21/01/2009 16:34

Am seriously looking at a Sebo Cat/Dog.

I don't let the dogs into the bedrooms, and i have wooden flooring everywhere else. I sweep and mop most days, the hair isn't a problem really, but we have ckc spaniels, and they are tiny next to a lab lol.
Keeping tidy after ds is harder - i just noticed a hand print on the TV.

georgimama ~ why is your westie evil? My chap is full of westie "character"

tengreenbottles · 22/01/2009 12:42

hoover the dog ,thats what my mum did with her labs ,sorts of cuts out the middleman

tengreenbottles · 22/01/2009 12:46

dimmed lighting and dog/mud coloured sofa helps too¬!

georgimama · 22/01/2009 12:59

I don't know why she's evil, maybe she's one of Satan's little pixies.

It could also euphamistically be described as Westie character, I suppose.

Hotcrabbitbunny · 22/01/2009 13:02

I feel sooooo much better now after reading all your answers. I assumed I was deficient in the cleaning department, but obviously a hairy slightly mucky house all year round is unavoidable.

MmeLindt · 22/01/2009 13:07

We had visitors the other day and their dog shed hair everywhere, thick black hair.

It made DH sneeze, he has a dog/cat allergy. Funnily enough, he has been ok with our puppy, she hardly sheds at all. Just as well as I would have had to have given DH away to a good home if he was allergic to our dog.

NutterlyUts · 22/01/2009 13:11

DrNorthener, get a furminator. You will get clouds and clouds off your lab at first, but after doing it every other day for a week, it'll tail off and once a week will make life a lot easier

Goober · 22/01/2009 13:13

Shave the dog.

snoringnightmare · 22/01/2009 17:57

Nutterly, I've just googled Furminator as I'd never heard of it. Thanks for that, will be buying one and you can use it on horses as well. Fab, two birds with one stone. Thank you!

ohdearwhatamess · 22/01/2009 18:03

Another vote for the furminator. We have a lot less hair on the sofa since I got one (provided I remember to use it ).

staffylover · 22/01/2009 18:08

Try Yumega from Pets at Home. Dogs Monthly gave it 10/10. You just put it in the food. It says within a month the shedding had halved and after two months, quote " all I can say is what problem"

Geepers · 22/01/2009 18:16

I have a cocker spaniel and I hate him. Sorry dog lovers, but it's true. I hoover 3-4 times daily and I still get balls of hair collecting under furniture.

We have hard floors and they need mopping daily because of his foot prints, although we have started making him stay in his bed on a towel in teh kitchen until his feet dry.

I will also never again get a dog. The only reason I keep him is because I would feel guilty finding a new home for him.

ohappydays · 22/01/2009 18:58

I have a black lab and cats. The lab seems to only really shed about twice a year. When she is moulting I groom with a fine comb which removes loads of hair. I have hard wood floors nearly every where and use a Henry - they go on for ever and ever. It doesnt seem to be a problem. However I have very bad eye sight so maybe Im not seeing the hairs - im happy

Bubbaluv · 23/01/2009 08:11

I have just ordered a furminator!
I have a white boxer and would like to be able to wear black clothes again one day.

frostyfingers · 23/01/2009 13:00

I have 2 black labs who I'm surprised aren't naked considering how much of their fur is on the floor. If they are muddy they always get hosed down and then towel dried - then left in utility room until dry. They don't go upstairs and they have a basket which they sit on (most of the time, except when hoovering bits from under the table...). I'm also lucky that we live near a river, and they swim a lot which I think helps. My vet also said that if they get dandruffy give them either margarine or a bit of olive oil in their food..... I've been eyeing up a whippet as my next dog - short hair, small feet and easy to exercise, a friend has one and it's wonderful!

tengreenbottles · 24/01/2009 19:29

Awww geepers i will have your cocker spaniel during the muddy season for you .

tengreenbottles · 24/01/2009 19:30

Frosty ,the whippet is the 'knicker sniffer' of the dog world,my friend has two and believe me whilst they are soooo much cleaner than a lab physically ,you will run out of pants in a week ,eurghh!
