Blasted dog has just peed in dd's bedroom again

He's not a puppy - he's 8. He is perfectly capable of 'asking' to go out - even in the night: sometimes the little monster wakes me to let him out. Sometimes he just pees wherever . He seems to think dd's room is his personal loo at the moment

is dd new?

any changes in the household?

mysterymoniker · 19/01/2009 12:26

can you put a baby gate across the door - or confine him to a more mop-uppable area?

is he neutered?

wotulookinat · 19/01/2009 12:26

are you cleaning it up well? biological washing powder is the best at taking the smell away so he doesn't think it's ok to go there again.

MadameCastafiore · 19/01/2009 12:35

Get some of the special spray that is biological that gets rid of the smell and confine him to an area that is easy to clean.

I have rubbed our pups nose in her wee and poo andthen confined her to her cage and although it is mean and frowned upon she hasn't gone in the house for ages - you have to let the dog know how cross you are and as pack leader you are not pleased in the slightest.

Roskva · 19/01/2009 14:47

He knows I'm not pleased - in fact, he gives the game away by mooching around looking guilty.

He's not neutered - he has a congenital breathing condition and our vet has advised against anaesthetising (sp?) for anything that is not life threatening because he could stop breathing while coming round from the anaesthetic.

We've got baby gates all over the house. I'm trying to get dh to remember to shut the one at the bottom of the stairs so the dog can't go up there - it's all hard floors downstairs.

Dd is 2.5, but ds is only 15 weeks. I'm trying very hard to make sure the dog gets some attention too, but it's not always easy. Thanks for the tip about the bio washing powder. I've been spraying it with dettol but that only masks the smell.

What do you do when you find it?

Call him to it, show him (not rubbing his nose in it - just force his head to look) and bellow "NO!" (as if DD was running into road). Throw dog in garden

Leave for 10 mins, bring him back inside and ignore for 24 hours.

Or, do the No then repeat every hour for a 5 or 6 hours

Basically remind him that it is utterly unacceptable and will not be tollerated - one or two of those episodes should help

Roskva · 20/01/2009 10:46

I'll try that, Lewis. In fact, I'll dig his crate out and push him in there for a while if he does it again.

I wouldn't suggest crating him for it - although you could after he's been in the garden because you're reinforcing the garden is where he needs to go.... crates are for peaceful bedtimes/his relaxing space (but yes - he can be put "to bed" if he's been naughty after the reinforcement bit)

Joolyjoolyjoo · 20/01/2009 12:02

What kind of dog is he? It could be he is establishing some sort of dominance over your dd (not in an aggressive way, but in a "this too is MINE!" kinda doggy way. I have a bitch who pees on my other dogs bed - poor old boy has to sleep on it. You might need to reinforce your ds's poision above the dog in the pack

Roskva · 20/01/2009 12:06

He's a pomeranian. They're notoriously hard to house train, not because they're thick but because they tend to make their own decisions about whether they want to do something. We finally managed to house train him when we lived in a caravan for a few months - he decided the whole thing was sleeping space

OP posts:
Joolyjoolyjoo · 20/01/2009 12:22

yeah, they can be quite single-minded! we have beagles and they too are hard to train. My bitch will quite happily lie and sleep in her own pee and/ or poo My dog isn't nearly so bad, but my bitch seems to feel the need to make a point of peeing/pooing in the hall when something upsets her

Roskva · 21/01/2009 14:40

So glad my pom doesn't do that - pee/poo in long fur doesn't bear thinking about!

It's just occurred to me that I'm potty traing dd and she keeps having accidents around the house - maybe dog thinks that if she can get away with it then so can he
