Anyone had a homecheck done?

We're hopefully having a homecheck done at the weekend for a rescue puppy. We're not too sure what happens. Obviously they will check the garden and house. Will they ask about where we will be walking the dog? I'm sure we'll be asked about vets.

What else will happen? What do they ask?

We are pretty nervous about it.

I had a list of questions to ask

  • what food to give, how often
  • favourite treats
  • were they micro chiped
  • were they spayed/neutered
  • exercise requirements
  • when there jabs were due
  • if they were up to date with their jabs

gawd... can't remember the rest...

they did ask where we would walk the dog...
they did look at our garden and suggested a different way to make it safe...
I'd start looking at vets now, and also insuance and puppy classes

good luck... what sort of a dog is it? have you got a name yet?

crikey... just noticed you've got a month old baby.... you'll have your hands full...

a lot of rescues don't rehome to families with small children...

The one we are hoping to get her from will rehome to us. We have checked that and they are fine.

Its a Staffie crossed with a lurcher. We're going to call her Pixie.

Our home checker looked at the garden, asked how long the dog would be left and whether we'd considered pet insurance. She also brought one of her dogs along so she could see our ds's reaction to it. He was fine. He got bored after about 10 minutes and went back to playing with his toys!

i got home checked by the rspca and the lady who came was lovely . She checked the garden was secure ,wanted to know where the dog would sleep ,what we would do if we went on holiday , our vet details , how often the dog would be left alone ,how often it would be walked ,if the children were used to dogs ,she really put me at ease and after all there are lots of different families for dogs and lots of happy dogs ,so dont get too stressed

We're having it done on Sunday afternoon. Really excited and nervous too.

When we adopted our terrier from Dogs Trust, they checked how secure our garden was. They were concerned, as we've got a pond, and they were worried the dog might jump in

I fostered dogs for Mayhew and the inspector was lovely, just asked stuff already mentioned and had a look around. It will be fine, try not to be nervous

We've got two rescue dogs- a local group.and RSPCA.
I think they want to check you have a safe garden, they ask where the dog will sleep etc.
Staffie lurcher - gorgeous- (one of ours is a lurcher cross).
Post some pics!

Ooh - glad I found this thread. We're thinking of getting a rescue puppy too and am getting anxious over what we need to do.
