does your cat have a delicate tummy and have to live off something other than tinned cat food?

Just got a 5 month kitten. She had a runny bum, for the first 5 days, despite being fed what she had at the rescue place. BUT she is also very greedy and swiped some of my older cat's adult style tinned meat whenever she could.
I took her to the original vets asscociated with the rescue place, and they gave her shots, anitbiotics, and a wormer. I then put her on a chicken diet for 4 days. Poo got better. Went back to vets monday just gone, and he gave her another shot. Inbetween time she has also had panacur on the chicken to combat the worms too.

Monday- friday, normal poo, and vet said to introduce normal meat back in. So i have been giving her some Felix kitten meat, and some normal dried food.

Seemed ok, so continued. This morning after 2 days of no chicken, she is runny again.

Does this mean she has an infection or intolerence i wonder? Also we went o local vet friday for her booster jabs for flu. No sure if that can affect poo.

She will eat anything it seems, i have never seen such a greedy cat.

have been looking around online and it seems that if a parasitic or enteritis condition is ruled otu then she might just be sensitie. There again, there are tons of answers about what to feed, and most cats with sensitive tums seem to differ wildly about what suits.

ffs. do i go back to the chicken only? or white fish maybe? trub is apparently this doesn't give enough nutrients.
I think i will try a better kitten type dry food.

Anything other than Purina One, salmon flavour, makes both my cats sick. Tis rather annoying to be honest. They are 8 and a half and were fine as kittens, then developed this aversion at about 4 years old.

PinkTulips · 18/01/2009 11:50

try giving her a decent quality dry food for the most part with occasional meals of good quality wet food (ie not weird smelling supermarket own brands.. all mine seem to have the runs at the minute thanks to aldi tinned )

also be very careful about what food she can steal... if i leave a cereal bowl on the table for even a minute after breakfast i can garuantee a cat will drink the milk and runny poo will ensue! get efficient at making sure there's nothing left lying around that she 'll eat and get sick from

My kitten is 4 mths and has runny bum, she was given Pro Kolin 3 times a day for about 5 days which helped, but not cleared it. I was told by the vet to put her on Iams which has helped a little but poos still look like cow splats and not cat poo.
She is having about 1 teaspoon of felix kitten pouch and a small handful of Iams twice a day with another small handful of Iams at lunch time. She also steals my other kittens food (7mths) hence why she has a small amount of meat to try to stop her stealing.
I think my vet wants to put her on a special sensitive diet next time he sees her.

My now 13 yr old cat had a runny bum when we first got him and vet told us to feed Hills Science Diet. All of our cats now eat Iams exclusively. Iams now because it makes us feel better they can have different flavours.

piratecat · 18/01/2009 12:59

lots of input thanks!!

I think i will go to garden centre and look at their top stuff. I will have to be more vigilant with her stealing. I am also going to asda, so will get some chicken. The older cat thinks it's xmas here!!! As of course i have had to give her some too.

you know what even my older cat has started thieving too, trying to get in the bin

she is copying the kitten!!

Try James Wellbeloved dry cat food. It is suitable for cats with intolerances, and my 5 year old siamese is now free of runny poos and i'm free of stinky litter trays!!

Grublin · 18/01/2009 17:56

I might try James Wb. I've heard them being recommended a fair bit.

Rolacola · 18/01/2009 22:29

My new one is the same. Doesn't seem to suit normal wet food. I get special wet food from the vet, which is rice and chicken. But recently, I have changed him onto Science Plan Sensitive stomach dry food (from pet shop), as it works out cheaper. He seems ok with this.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 18/01/2009 22:32

We use James Wellbeloved as well - chicken and rice or lamb and rice seems to be good for our cat.

caspercat · 19/01/2009 11:13

Most cats really are better off on a dry diet - better for their teeth, digestive system. Works out cheaper for you in the long run too - honestly. As long as you follow the feeding guide lines & don't feed ad lib, the daily cost will be much lower after the initial outlay. And you don't get the waste you do with tinned food, also the smallest amount (of wet food) left in the bowl will attract flies in the summer. Tinned food is generally quite rich & is the crappy bits of meat which even McDonalds would reject!

By dried food, btw, i mean complete diets, such as Hills Science Plan, James Wellbeloved, Iams, NOT Go-cat or Brekkies (or similar!)

I think some people worry that cats will get bored eating dry food every day, but they really don't. In the wild they'd just eat whatever came along, so could just be mice day in day out. They certainly wouldn't think, ooh, i fancy a bird today, maybe a goldfish tomorrow! My cats have been on Hills for 14yrs+, and still tuck in with gusto. they're just glad to be fed!!

HTH, sorry for huge post!!

My cat suffers ibs

piratecat · 19/01/2009 16:31

well it's day 2 of the dry food! this mornings poo was half normak half runny. god how gross, but hey.

i ended up getting some iams kitten food, as it was on pffer. I cannot afford the hills atm. If it goes ok with the dreid then we might move on iyswim. I felt a bit guilty buying the iams as i seemed to remember it having something bad to do with something eco wise or tradewise?

shite they test their products on animals who are kept in awful conditions .

OP posts:
Grublin · 19/01/2009 18:04

I'm only on Iams as it was easy to get hold of till I can get James Wb.
I've read various things about Iams too

caspercat · 19/01/2009 20:15

Yes, Iams don't have a great reputation, i personally wouldn't use them. Places like Pets at Home normally have a promotion on for Hills diets, might be worth taking a look??
