We have a gorgeous sprocker spaniel (cocker/springer cross)who is nearly 5 who we would like to use as a stud dog. We are not sure how to go about it. Any advice most welcome.

Adverts in local papers, ask the vets in your area if you can put up a notice, word of mouth.

DON'T!

Sorry but there are plenty of dogs out there who need a home without ANOTHER load of pups in a pound!

If you insist on doing it, get your dog health checked THOROUGHLY and make sure you breed him with a bitch who has had the same.

I still say dont though.

I echo Salem, please DONT. for one thing he has no pedigree so what would you get for stud fees anyway? He is actually a bit long in the tooth too and it WILL change his personality, he will become alot more dominant and that isn't a good thing if you don't handle it properly. Enjoy your family pet but don't use him commercially. There is a credit crunch and people are not going to be willing to pay top dollar for cross-breeds. If he were a pedigree dog with a good pedigree then breeders would be interested and pay a premium. Would you be happy to offer his services to anyone who asked? So that way you wont be sure all the pups will go to loving PERMANENT homes, so as lucky said, more pressure on dogs homes who at this moment in time simply cannot cope.

I honestly would not do it, the minute he gets a taste of the action he will want it all the time (bit like most men) and he will be likely to stray to find it, and potentially become aggresive.

When i had my first rottie, he was such a handsome looking dog [proud] and was very gentle. He was a big rottie and people like that - i was always being approached by people who wanted to breed from him. I always refused, he was my pet/friend/child even - why would i want to exploit him?

Look at this topic area. Surely there are enough people already rehoming dogs without adding to the thousands already in rescue.

chloejessmeg · 21/01/2009 14:05

I agree - please don't. Far too many dogs needing homes already. There are more dogs than owners - why add to that?

I echo the "don't"s, but wonder what you were thinking of breeding him to? Another "sprocker"? bear in mind that thsi kind of in-breeding should not be attempted by amateurs. Most proper breeders looking for a stud dog would be looking for a slightly younger dog, probably with a few cc's to his name (you usually need to be part of the show circuit and have your dog "proved" before many people will give you stud fees) Pedigrees should be scrutinised for any mismatches or close similarities with both dogs..it really is a minefield, so unless it is something you are well-versed in, I would be cautious.
