....I wondered what he would say.

It is just under the ear in the pink bit of skin...growing fast (it wasn't there before XMmas). It is about 1cm (maybe slighty smaller) quite fat. White and shiny, attached to the skin. Can't bring myself to touch it.

He is a young cat - 3 years old very healthly. seems fine in himself.

Any ideas?

cazzybabs · 11/01/2009 21:39

sounds like a tick.

are there any in other places? although they are usually on the head and neck of cats and dogs where they go sniffing nthrough grass.

CarGirl · 11/01/2009 21:42

Think you buy frontline type stuff off the vets and then the ticks will go yuck and drop off.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 11/01/2009 21:43

I hope all goes well at the vets..
sounds like it could be a tick they come off easily though so the vet should be able to sort it quite quickly

cazzybabs · 11/01/2009 21:43

will frontline kill it....we are very bad at remembering to frontline him...we shall do him now.

No I don't think it will.. have you googled tick?

the way I got one off my dog a few years ago was to put a cigarette on it and it let go of my dog. BUT I don't recommend doing that if you are going to the vets.. especially if it might not be a tick

LackaDAISYcal · 11/01/2009 21:45

you can take them off yourself with a pair of tweezers but there is a bit of a knack to it as you need to cleanly take them off or else the mouth parts can be left embedded and go sceptic.

maybe the vets this time and they can show you how to do it properly, plus do a flea/tick treatment at the same time.

thisisyesterday · 11/01/2009 21:46

i didn't think ticks were that big??? that's scary

LackaDAISYcal · 11/01/2009 21:47

i read somewhere that covering them in vaseline smothers them, so they let go and drop off; although you'd need to look out for it, or it'll attach to something/someone else if it gets hungry again!!

cazzybabs · 11/01/2009 21:50

i feel really really ill now I wish I hadn't googled ticks...anyway we have frontlined him,.,and I am going to throw him outside so the tick and go and get off not in my house.

good on you - would keep an eye on it though as the head and body can detatch so you make sure you have the head as well! (sorry for TMI!)

hercules1 · 11/01/2009 23:02

I agree about leaving the head etc behind when pulling off. We've done it with vinegar.

combustiblelemon · 11/01/2009 23:20

You can buy special tweezer things that make it easier- they clasp it without you having to exert pressure on the tweezers. The trick is to get a firm hold on the tick (with tweezers) then twist it around two or three times before pulling it away from the cat's body. This makes sure that you get all the tick. You can drop the tick into a bowl of water and drown it.

LackaDAISYcal · 12/01/2009 14:50

sloching them with tcp tends to get them to let go sharpish as well. At least it did when I had three teeny tiny ones in my arm

LackaDAISYcal · 12/01/2009 14:51

sloching.....I mean sloshing.

and well done your DH for being brave!
