Rescuing a Kitten

kayzr · 06/01/2009 13:17

We really would like a kitten but nowhere will let us rescue one. It is all to do with having young children. It upsets me a little because we'd much rather rescue one instead of buying one.

My mum says people are always trying to get rid of kittens but I can't seem to find anyone who has any.

If anyone knows anywhere/anyone in North Yorkshire who has kittens to rescue/adopt that doesn't mind small children please let me know.

Thanks.

maybe worth keeping an eye in pet shops/vets/newsagents for postcards for people who are re-homing themselves for whatever reason?
we got our cat from a colleague of DH who had to rehome a kitten bought for her DCs. The RSPCA wouldn't take it because they were full.

slayerette · 06/01/2009 17:12

How old are your DC? The RSPCA let us rehome two kittens with a 5 yr old. I didn't know they had a no young children policy. Have you tried independent local shelters as well as the CPL/RSPCA?

LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 17:15

Alot of rescues will allow you to rehome with a young un.
The rescue I foster for allow it. I rehomed one of their kittens to a home with a 5 week old.

Go to www.rescuehelpersunite.co.uk and register that you would like a kitten, the rescues will JUMP on you literally.

If you were closer I'd suggest taking on hugo as he's the last kitten from the foster litter that I have here

I'm in Wrexham, North wales. if your less than 2 hours away then we could try to arrange transport? - He was meant to be getting a home in London but I think it's fallen through.

happynewRia · 06/01/2009 17:18

Luckysalem - how do you get into fostering? Sorry for hijack.

LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 17:19

I just contacted a rescue (via the website I put on) and offered my services. It wasn't long before I was attacked requested! lol

kayzr · 06/01/2009 17:19

They are very young. DS1 is 21 months and DS2 is 3 weeks.

I rang the RSPCA about some kittens they have near where I am and I was told they didn't like to rehome animals with young children as the children might tease them.

I'm in North Yorkshire Lucky, but I don't drive. I'd have Hugo in a shot as I think he is gorgeous. I can't believe you still haven't got him a home.

Hugo is currently living with my DD who was 6 months when we got him. (I think around that) He is utterly and ubberly child proof and puts up with a lot of what DD does to him.

All you have to remember is to allow him time out and somewhere where the kids can't reach him so that if he wants to stay in the same room as you he can. Also if he cries then the kids have DEFINATLY been too rough (he's only ever done it twice here and we've had to tell DD she wasn't being gentle - she is learning)

Through all the "stroking" and playing that she does with him he's only ever batted her once and it was cos she'd pulled his tail and even then he kept his claws away.

If you want to take him on then please email me and I'll give you the rescues phone number. We can arrange transport for him to you but they will probably ask for some donation towards that as well as his donation which is £40.

kayzr · 06/01/2009 17:35

I've just joined that website and asked about rehoming a kitten or a puppy as we'd love either really.

How much do you think they would like for a donation for transport?

I honestly don't know I'm afraid.

That rescuse website is bad for my health I tell you. There are about a million animals I'd like to rehome but DH keeps saying no

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 18:13

Hey, live my life I see all these animals (don't look in the pound animal section) and want to take them all home.

DP says 2 cats is enough for now. lol I'll change him!!! HEHEHE

kayzr · 06/01/2009 18:17

My DH reckons he doesn't like cats but he is always disappearing at my mums to go and play with them.

I would love to foster but I don't think I would give them back.

Its quite funny cos when I fostered this lot (mum and four 3 week old kittens) I kept telling myself I'm not keeping them and its ok cos it stuck like that. HOWEVER, DP keeps saying your gonna end up keeping Hugo and I'm going no i'm not, Yes you will he goes.

I swear he's saying that he wants to keep them but won't actually say it so that if Hugo does say he can keep the hugher ground. lol

kayzr · 06/01/2009 18:21

Well if you want to keep him I'll happily keep looking.

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 18:22

No He will get his own home, he doesn't get enough attention here with DD and 2 other cats.

kayzr · 06/01/2009 18:25

Ok then. Just checking. I feel quite excited now.

kayzr · 06/01/2009 18:55

DH is starting to have 2nd thoughts

He is moaning about having a litter tray. I might kill him.

happynewRia · 06/01/2009 19:19

thanks LuckySalem.

good luck kaz.

when my current cat is "peacefully resting" (he is too old now and it would be unfair to invade his territory) I'm going to get cats to use up all those baby names...

LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 22:22

happyNR - Brilliant reason to foster cats IMHO

Good luck on that!!

scifinerd · 06/01/2009 22:28

yes I am going to offer my DH the choice between another baby or another kitten

LuckySalem · 06/01/2009 22:29

LMAO Sci - Kitten will help you lose weight while you chase it around the house trying to rescue your latest sock from its mouth.....
