Calling Cat People! Is it furball season?!

Hi All

I have two shorthaired moggies, one is 13 and the other is 9 years old. We seem to be having more little splotches of vomit in the mornings than usual. 9 times out of 10 there are furballs and I know they can have some practice sessions that don't result in furballs so not too concerned that it's illness per se. They certainly don't seem to be losing weight and seem healthy enough otherwise. The thing that's puzzling me most is that it's mostly in the night when they're confined to the downstairs section of the house. They're hardly ever sick in the day. They're also indoors cats which I believe doesn't help the problem.

My plan is to try mixing in some furball diet with their existing special diet (the younger cat has urinary problems - it's dry food) and try to groom them with a cat wire brush to remove excess loose hair. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how I can manage this problem? Is it normal to have this every night, (not sure if it's one cat or both)?

Would value any suggestions/shared experience.

You can get tubes of a greasy, meaty flavoured substance for furball treatment. You give a blob to the cat to eat, and it sticks the hairs together in the stomach, so that they pass through and are passed in the poo. It's the tickling that makes them vomit. More frequent grooming will help too, being in a warm house will make them shed more than cats who go outside a lot. You can get the stuff from vets, or Pets at Home. I don't think vomiting every day sounds normal, though.

Thanks to you both. I did try the paste a couple of times before but the one affected the most wouldn't go near it. I even tried smearing it on her front paw for her to lick off and she promptly threw a wobbler, gave her paw a vigorous shake and the paste spattered all over the walls!

I did get some that's cleverly disguised in the form of a crunchy treat this week, and again she won't go near it. I may have to resort to hiding it in a piece of cooked chicken, (her favourite treat).

I will persevere but if the measures above don't bring about any improvement over the next few days I'll take them to the vet to be sure.

They're loving all the extra grooming which is good!

Thanks again.
