im a terrible mummy. my baby dog has escaped from the garden on new year's eve and i havent seen him since. i only discovered yesterday morning wheni went out to feed him and he wasnt there. ive been out looking and im about to ring all the local vets and dog pound. going to do posters aswell. im so worried he may have been hurt. OH says someone has probably taken him in but i cant imagine it. is that likely. i dont know many people that would take in a dog they sw just wandering. any other suggestions for what i might try?

Did you not even think NYE fireworks 5 months old dog? He probably escaped through fear

breaghsmum · 03/01/2009 11:28

thank you all for your advice, he was found yesterday evening and taken to the local dog pound. i am fully aware of the stupid mistakes i made and selfeshness i possessed when going out on NYE. i really do feel terrible for it and will never put my pup through anything like that again. thankfully he is well and came to no harm. he is going on monday to be microchipped and the gate has had a panel fitted accross it to prevent this ever happening again. and he wont be sleeping out again.

I'm glad he's found. I will restrain myself from making any comments other than it wasnt selfish to go out initself.

MarmadukeScarlet · 03/01/2009 11:42

Am openmouthed that you left a small breed puppy out in a kennel in subzero temperatures, when there were likely to be fireworks because you were going out? Is this pup - to whom you refer as your 'baby' - not allowed in your house when you are out?

Am leaving the thread for fear of causing offence.

breaghsmum · 03/01/2009 11:51

marmaduke he is a hound, not a small breed pup and i explained he was outside as he has accidents when we arent there to take him out. and i accept this was a mistake.

Dogs can, and do sleep outside, in properly designed kennels. Lots of working dogs do this. Although im not sure about puppies - it also is important that there quarters are warm. dry and draft free. They are animals at the end of the day, animals with warm fur coats who would live outside in the wild.

I personally wouldn't keep a dog outside, especially if it were used to being inside. I second the crate for when you go out, but not for long periods of time. Cleaning up wee is all part of dog ownership, as is picking up shit. .

It was very unwise to leave your puppy out on NYE due to the fireworks etc, i think you may have created a problem for yourselves now as he is going to associate them with being scared and alone.

LucyEllensmummy · 03/01/2009 11:54

please excuse my dire english - THEIR quarters!!!

hercules1 · 03/01/2009 11:55

Agree with LucyEllen. Sadly this wasnt the case for this puppy.

chloemegjess · 03/01/2009 12:50

Please don't leave him outside again . If you are not prepared to put up with the mess, don't get a puppy as you must have known it would do this?

Lulumama · 03/01/2009 12:51

at least you found him

NAB3lovelychildren · 03/01/2009 13:17

How long have you had him?

BlueSapphire77 · 03/01/2009 13:28

Totally unrelated i know but we have a ferret that lives outside..he has been microchipped in case something happens and he gets out, it was only 15 quid so not a great amount to ensure him being safely returned, oh and we brought him inside on NYE because it was bloody freezing and cos of the fireworks lol pampered i know..they are designed to live outside yes, but a little kindness goes a long way..if not too cold i put a hot water bottle in his bed and extra bedding and give him warm milk of an evening, and early in the morning.

I'm glad your dog is ok and you were so lucky to get him back.

LucyEllensmummy · 03/01/2009 13:32

I used to have two giant rabbits that lived outside - In the dire winter they would go in the greenhouse of a night, other than that they would live in the garden, no hutches - they both had one, we left the doors open and they never ventured inside. They would run around in the snow, everything - I think i brought one of them inside once when it was bitter cold.

MarmadukeScarlet · 03/01/2009 13:48

My mistake, I thought he must be a small breed due to the fact he could fit under the gate - what breed is he?

LEM you are right, I have many friends who have working dogs (in total 4 x collies, a Doberman and a GSD) that live outside, but - as you quite rightly state - in proper kennels.

The majority are shut into fully enclosed 'rooms' at night with no access to outdoor space, there are heaters for when it is very cold. Their beds have high sides (like traditional whelping boxes) so they can snuggle down during they day etc.

bella29 · 03/01/2009 18:42

Glad the pup's okay.

lol at Bluesapphire's pampered ferret - good for you! At least I am not the only one mad enough to share my hot water bottle with my pets

Happy New Year, Marmaduke - when do you get your pup?

MarmadukeScarlet · 03/01/2009 19:25

hello Bella Happy New Year to you too. We have to wait until one of our chosen bloodlines has a litter as they are still quite unusual.

There is another thread that needs you, about a 5 week old puppy being sold/seperated from its mother and needing feeding/care advice. I'll off and find a link.

MarmadukeScarlet · 03/01/2009 19:27

5 week old pup

Goober · 03/01/2009 19:31

Is this for real?

A 5 month old puppy was left outside? On New Year's Eve? Fireworks etc.?
FFS!!

Call yourself a responsible dog owner do you?

My family have been invited to a party tomorrow which is an hour and a half drive from here. I am going without my DH so our 4 year old Boxer isn't left alone.............

duchesse · 03/01/2009 19:38

I really think that crating him and leaving him indoors would have by far been the best option. It is quite probable that someone took pity on the poor little thing and has taken him away for his own safety. We have sub zero temperatures at night over the last few days. Words fail me that you should consider leaving him outdoors in those conditions.

BlueSapphire77 · 03/01/2009 21:06

yeah and my dog has his own bit of carpet to lie on but he does stay in the kitchen.. he's just never been an outside dog but he does have a kennel..which cost me an arm and a sodding leg but its more for summer so he has some shade when we're all out in the garden.
Fencing not brilliantly secure at ours (privet hedges grr)
He does stay alone in the house while we are at work an unfortunate situation, he is loving me being on maternity leave more than my son is lol, but when no one is in we leave a radio or tv on not to spoil him but more to give him a feeling someone is there. Not an ideal world though i suppose, but for this reason itself would never have a puppy.
If, and this does happen, while i am at work, i get ragged to do some emergency overtime, i tell them i have to go fetch the dog, and take him to my mums so he isn't alone for longer than i can help.
It is hard being a parent or pet owner and we all make mistakes, some of them silly ones. Am sure the OP will make sure this one isn't repeated, i'm glad she got her dog back

bella29 · 03/01/2009 23:17

You're mad. bluesapphire, but I do understand where you are coming from!

Thanks for the link, Marmaduke - tbh there was lots of good advice on there already but I have put my tuppence in, for what it's worth! Let us know when you get your little one, please!

Apolgies for hijack

BlueSapphire77 · 04/01/2009 14:04

Got to be mad to be a mum or a pet owner lol

I try not to pamper my pets as such, just give them the respect and love they deserve..in exchange for the unconditional love i receive from them, especially my dog who thinks i'm a culinary genius
It is possible to balance that with letting them know their place in the 'pack' at home, which is a good idea with kids and dogs (i'm on another thread where a baby was bitten by a mollycoddled dog )

And he doesn't comment about what i look like in the morning...is ALWAYS pleased to see me...
Can't complain really

salsmum · 05/01/2009 16:36
