Puppy throwing up! What do I do?

Right Fred - 16 week old Labradoodle started throwing up last night - just her food about 30 minutes after she ate it - DH thought she had a piece of rawhide bone thing trapped and had brought her food up in the process of trying to cough to dislodge that.

We didn't feed her again last night and she slept ok and then went for normal wee and poo (wasn't runny) this morning but has just brought her breakfast up.

What do I do? Is this serious enough to take her to the vets or could it just be a little tummy upset and I should just not feed her for 24 hours or something?

Or do I ring the vet and take her straight up there - she seems fine other than the 2 instances of being sick!

Do I walk her - was planning on going to the local cornfields this morning for a nice walk with pup and the kids as she will be on her own for a couple of hours this afternoon as we were supposed to be going to visit one of DDs old friends from her last school!

What do you do - are the pretty hardy things and you just leave them or should I be sitting next to her with a bowl and treating her like I would the kids - do dogs like calpol?

hmmm, i'm a bit torn here. Normally i would say, for a dog to starve for 24 hours and then feed chicken and rice. A puppy i tend to say feed small amounts of chicken and rice. Something is worrying me here though - you say she is bringing back her food. Is it undigested food? I'm sorry to say this, but i would take her to the vets, maybe feed her again and see if she chucks up again, if she does vets ASAP. definately ring them for advice, I used to work in a vets and if i had a labrador that was chucking up but with no diarroeah i would be concerned re a blockage or foreign body on account of the fact that labs eat EVERYTHING!.

And PLEASE throw your rawhide chews away. Horrible bloody things that can cause dangerous blockages in puppies.

Right have rung the vet after reading your post LucyEllensmummy.

They said to see if she throws up anymore today and then if not to give her some scrammbled Egg and Rice this evening and just watch her and then bring her in in the morning if she is sick again.

So will have to put off going to see DDs friends I think as am bit worried that she has something trapped now!

What should I give a puppy to chew on - she really goes to town on those bones chewing away for ages! Thought this was preferable to the furniture!

Agree with lucyellensmummy re chews etc.

Nylabones are very good, and they do special softer ones for pups. Real bones are not good as they can splinter.

HTH & that she's okay.

I second the nylabones - they are great, designed so tiny digestible bits come off. Raw hide bones are the work of the devil, although I give them to my JR .

Don't worry too much about your dog, im sure he will be fine - probably just ate too quickly, which was one thing i was going to ask if he woolfed his food down, also what are you feeding him?

I would be inclined towards chicken and rice as apposed to Egg, but thats just my opinion.

Thanks guys

We didn't feed her yesterday and have given her scrambled egg and rice this morning and she has kept that down - although her gassy eggy parps are vile!

I will haver a look out for nylabones at the pet shop and will watch her to see how quickly she eats her food - we did think after reading the back of the bakers purina (which the breeder fed her on) that maybe we were giving her too much and we have over estimated how much she will weigh as an adult dog - we thought 25k and upped her food intake but now I think maybe that wad too much.

Will ease her into eating that agin with it mixed with rice in small portions over the next few days and see how we get on.

Do we walk her as much as usual though - I thought not as she may not have the energy she normally has although she is tearing it around the garden quickly enough!

nylabones are fab for puppies my pup loves the bacon flavour ones. Rawhide not good for pups.

Hope she is feeling better. My pup had sickness and diarhea before Christmas. It was horrible and as she is house trained she was mortified at messing on the floor. Howled by the door!

Within 24 hours she was fine and back to tearing up anything she could get hold of!

Glad Fred the girl puppy's doing better.

Was totally prepared for a major diarrhoea incident here after my 7 month old lab found his way into his feed bin and did what labs do .

Thankfully all seems to be okay though - I starved him for the rest of yesterday after he did that, but the big soulful brown eyes were almost unbearable
