We want to get a dog, we did want to rehome from a shelter but have been refused by all the close ones to us as the ds's are under 5, which i understand but am a bit upset about, we really wanted to give a dog a second chance.

Anyway looks like we will have to go down another route, is our only option the local papers?

It is so bloody sad that people take on pets and abandon them without a second thought

Twll me about it, my only dog was a Boarder Collie we had when i was a toddler untill i was 15, he was a lovely dog, my mum and dad would have moved hell and earth before they got rid of him, we got him off a disgusting family who beat him and kept him in a cupboard when he was a tiny new puppy.

Charlee - if you are in south east I can put you in touch with a great local animal charity.

CharleeInPantoPaperChains · 27/12/2008 18:04

I am in West Sussex

charlee &

Both of my cats are from the Cats Protection League (one in 2000 & the other in 2007). My oldest boy, Alfie, was 2 when I got him and was horribly badly treated by his 'owner', so much so that he was TERRIFIED of me (or anyone) for ages. He spent the first 6 months of his adoption with me under my bed shaking with terror. Poor little bugger. Almost 9 years on (I got him on 02.01.00) he is fiercly loyal to me but is can still be upset by the slightest noise or someone being a bit boisterous. He has been in a happy, loving, gentle home for 9 years but he is still scarred by his early years .

Our little chap, Oscar, was only 10wks when we took him in. Part of a litter found in a box on the CPL rehoming centre doorstep, not a great start to a little life but he doesn't seem to have suffered and violence or mistreatment, at least. He just wasn't wanted.

I've just checked with them, sorry, it's a bit too far for them. Sorry

good luck with Lab rescue trust - we gave them a long list of our requirements ie. not a puppy, not a dog that jumped up or one that was afraid of horses and wouldn't chase chickens and so on....

We were vetted by a very 'doggy' woman but have to say that they provided us with a perfect dog that was being rehomed due to owners downsizing. So not all dogs have been ill treated.Loads of dog owners go into care etc and could be ideal for you.

Hi Charlee

Have you looked at the Kennel Club website ? They have a 'puppy finder' which is a search engine for breed and area. The breeders in a list with a lilac/purple flower next to them are KC accredited breeders, it gives the number & sex of the puppies in the litter as well as the contact details of the breeder and the litter D.O.B.

Kennel Club 'Find a puppy' link

Dont listen to idiotic people saying you shouldnt take a dog from a rescue home. They are there for many reasons. Responsible rescue centres will not rehome an aggressive dog, so try the Dogs Trust or Battersea Dogs Home.

Hi not sure if you have already got a puppy but as a suggestion have you tried Many Tears? www.manytears.co.uk A good friend of mine had two elderly and very placid spaniels from them when her daughter was only 18 months old. They are in South Wales but have many homeboarders who look after the dogs all around the country.
