Dog training advice?

We're not doing too bad with training our 7 month old pup. She will sit, stay, leave and in the hose/garden she will mostly come when we call her. But once we go outside its a different story.

We use rewards etc and like I say in the house she is perfect but when ever we're out she just won't come at all. I spent ages yesterday trying to get her back on her lead, she just gets so giddy when we're out that even if i'm waving a dog treat at her she just isn't interested.

Any advice really appreciated

Do you have a long line you could use? We found this quite good for recall training and you lose the fear that they will run off. Also a pocket stuffed with cocktail sausages help!

Yup, long line and 'dog sausages' as we call them in this house. Are you going to take her to obedience training? We took our pup and all the dogs were perfect in their own homes but nutty on walks..being in a room full of other dogs whilst doing their sit/stays etc really helps.

let her know before you leave the house that you have treats in your pocket, perhaps even give her one Take double or more what you normally take and concentrate less on the actual walk and more on the sitting, staying, leaving etc when out and give loads of treats. We used to find also that there is a split second between being able to get their attention (and therefore getting the to come to you or do what you want) and losing their attention before they run off, its just knowing that moment

I don't have a long lead, do you mean like one of those retractable ones?

No, I meant like a long lead (for walking in the park with, obviously not the road).
We have a large dog so retractors no good for us.

I found with mine that if I made a lot of excitable noises and walked in the opposite direction as if to leave him, he usually came running. You've got to make it more exciting to come to you (ie exciting, whooping noises) than to stay with what they are doing IYSWIM.

Good luck.

And of course, lots of praise and reward when they come

thanks guys, have just been looking online and think i have found the kind of lead you mean, found one that is 30ft long.

Showing pup treat and giving her one before we go out is a really good idea, i'm definately going to try that

Oh good luck. It worked with our pooch. Lots of practice and rewards in the park.
