How often oes your 13wk pup poo ?

Me again ....

Our Springer Pup poo's between 7-10 times a day ! Is that normal ? He wakes up about 6am and asks to be let out of his crate whereupon he'll do his first poo of the day. They then come at regular intervals after that.

He's better than he was but he still poo's inside the house and has a penchant for doing it in the hall in front of the front door !

I know accidents will always happen at this age but he can be out in the garden for 10-20 mins (after his food too) and then he'll come in and poo ... Agh !
Thank goodness for 'Oust'

my springer is 14 weeks he poo's after each meal (he is down to three meals a days since 12 weeks). He sometimes does another smaller one at other times but I would say about 4 or 5 times a day.

What are you feeding him? and how much?

luvlydECMOrations · 19/12/2008 22:21

Oh we have a cat flap it a bit annoying that he can still fit through it but it has helped reduce accidents as he takes himself out sometimes!

luvlydECMOrations · 19/12/2008 22:22

oh sorry he's 16 weeks not 14...losing track of time already!

At this age they will typically poo about 45 mins after food, or sometimes straight away.

You need to check his food as those with a high fibre content or cheaper foods with lots of 'fillers' will create more poo.

Not sure Oust will get the smell out as far as he is concerned - you need to use diltued biological washing powder or a special spray like Simple Solution. If any of the smell remains he will do it again in the same place.

oh, and try praising wildly & giving a small treat when he does it outside .

Tillyboo · 19/12/2008 22:38

Thanks for the replies all.

He is having 3 meals of Puppy Science Diet a day and he's having the recommended amount across the 3 meals for his weight. We add a tiny bit (literally a heaped teaspoon) of Butchers wet puppy food as that was what he'd been used to but we are slowly weaning him off the tinned.

We got him from our local RSPCA and he's apparantly been wormed but I did get some more from my vet when I took him for a check up last week - all was well.
I haven't seen any worms at all in his poo.

His poo is normal poo shaped although sometimes they are a bit more loose as he's a monkey for eating grass, moss etc. from the garden.

His farts stink ... could it be the SD food ? I was going to feed him James Wellbeloved but the SD is what he has been fed prior to us having him.

SD is a good food.

Grass is a normal part of dog's diet and they will eat small amounts to get roughage so don't worry about that.

James Wellbeloved is also good but if you do switch him do it graudally over 5-7 days, slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing the old so that he doesn't get a tummy upset.

Is he getting any treats or supplements, because he shouldn't really be very farty on that kind of diet?

JB - The only treats the little man has are the odd kong stuffies you break up & put inside - probably 2-3 a day that's all. He has no tit bits or scraps at all. But he will eat plants, leaves and stuff from the garden, and the odd acorn he finds. He's already poo'ed 3 times this morning and the last lot was more a dribble but it was greeny and grassy and a bit slimy.

I'm worried it's what he's eating in the garden that's effecting his tummy.

We have almost eliminated the wet food after 10 days of having him.

Would it hurt to worm him again, he was last wormed (we were told by the RSPCA) around 2 weeks ago? I think over 12 weeks of age it should be every month ?

Hello Tillyboo

Worming is every fortnight until 12 weeks of age, every three months thereafter.

Don't let him eat acorns - they are toxic. Dogs Trust has info on this (look under O for oak)

here

Your vet should have advised you on worming etc when you took him for his jabs.

Maybe its the kong thing thats upsetting him. Springers are notorious for sensitive tummys. Try no kong treats for a couple of days.

I'm worming my puppy every month till 6 months and then every 3 months.

My springer is just eating a large twig he brought in through the cat flap! He has just tried to eat 2 baubles off the christmas tree and several strands of tinsel

Last week he ate a needle which was rather alarming.

I love springers!
