how do I rehouse a dog we can no longer manage?

It breaks my heart to have to say this but current circumstance mean that we will have to rehome our dog.

I wondered if anyone knew what the best way of doing this was, I don't want to sell her, just to make sure she goes to someone who can love and look after her properly

Can you wait until after Christmas?

Dog's Trust are fab - we got both our dogs from there and both times their first concern was if WE suit the DOG, nit the other way around. They do their best to find a permanant home for the dog.

Anyways, they don't rehome during December, so your dog would have to be there for a few weeks if you rehomes him now.

Why can't you keep him?
Not judgy, just wondering.

Sorry to hear you have to rehome your dog. I had to with my dog a few months back. I took her to Battersea Dogs Home because she was growling at ds because he kept hitting her so wasn't fair on either of them to keep her. I have since found out that she has been adopted into a family until they find a permenant home for her.

littleboyblue · 18/12/2008 18:32

rehouse, even

Dropdeadfred · 18/12/2008 18:32

whithout prying...why can't you keep her? does he have bad habits? does she cost too much to feed?

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 18/12/2008 18:39

Sorry you have to rehome your dog

I second the dogs trust, as they're one of the few rehoming charities who won't ever put a dog down just because it can't find a home quickly. And they're really thorough with their homechecks etc.

SubRosa · 18/12/2008 19:31

Either Dogs Trust or Blue Cross are good. We had our dog from Dogs Trust and they assess you, to make sure you're right for the dog, rather than the other way round.

Sorry you're having to do this, it's never an easy decision to make

She's a lovely dog but without going into too much detail we've recently found out that DP is ill and he'll be spending long periods of time in hospital. I'm going to be there with him a lot too and its not going to be fair on the dog.

If DP does come home he is going to need plenty of rest and having a dog around just own't work.

It is breaking ym heart to get rid of our big fluffy thing but I have no choice

Oh Flixx, I am so sorry

Is there anyone who can foster the dog for awhile....

If I wasn't going back to work in January, I would do it in a heartbeat (you by/in Hampshire by any chance...?)

mummiesnet · 18/12/2008 20:32

There is a charity I think it's called the cinnamon trust or similar that arranges foster homes for similar circs I think.

I am off work til July (mat leave) and work from home anyway if you need a foster?

slackrunner · 18/12/2008 20:32

flixx - what sort of dog is it? Is it small? (I ask on the off-chance that it is a small breed and I could foster it for you alongside our big dogs).

Maybe another MNetter would be able to help?

NotBigJustBolshy · 18/12/2008 20:41

2nd the suggestion of the cinnamon trust. I'm a volunteer walker with the trust and they can provide short and long term foster care for all sorts of pets when the owner is very unwell and/or elderly. Definitely worth contacting them to see if they could help.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 18/12/2008 20:47

Speak to your local vet- they often know someone who would be willing to foster/ has just lost a similar dog etc.

If your dog is a specific breed, there will be a rescue association for that breed, which you should be able to google and get the contact details- they rehome to people used to that type of dog, and obviously to people who are actively lookign for that type of dog.

Dogs Trust are also good in situations like yours, although one of our clients had a bit of a bad experience trying to rehome a lovely dog with them- she had a mild form of anxiety (the dog) and they couldn't say categorically that she would never bite, so DT wouldn't take her

Or is there any way having a volunteer/ dog walker in a couple of times a day could make it possible to keep her with you? Having her around but without the complication of having to walk her etc might actually be beneficial to you both at this time?

Whatever road you decide, good luck

mummiesnet · 18/12/2008 20:47

NOtbig, I would love to volunteer for cinnamon trust, can you advise how to go about this?

flixx · 18/12/2008 21:06

Slackrunner, she's a lab cross but not exactly sure as we got her from the dogs home. She is big though and very energentic so needs a lot of lokking after.

I am in Cheshire so miles away from you purpleduck but thank you xx

Mummiesnet, I will definately try that charity, I hadn't heard of dog fostering before but I am definately going to look into that. Will go and google cinnamon trust straight away

Thanks for all the advice, appreciate it xxx

Good luck flixx, and best wishes for your dh

slackrunner · 18/12/2008 22:54

Flixx, I'll ask my dh, although I think it will be a resounding no as we have a collie x and a lab already ( 3 med to large dogs might be pushing my luck!). However, I think there's loads of good advice on here, so hopefully you'll be able to find someone to help you out

NotBigJustBolshy · 19/12/2008 09:51

Hi mummiesnet! If you want to find out about volunteering for the Cinnamon Trust just email them or phone the head office. Alternatively, download the application form that you can find on the website (think it's under the "donation" tab). You need a couple of references from people who have known you for at least 5 years. I am not able to foster pets because I have a dog who wouldn't tolerate another dog in the house, but he's quite happy to walk with other dogs.

Go for it! They always need more volunteers. And my dcs have enjoyed joining in the walking during the holidays.
