I wouldn't mind feeding her things like actual chicken and stuff but I've tried that and it gives her the squits and she's 13 now and losing control at the back end.
I have tried all sorts of food over the yrs and she may eat it for a few days then stops.
Currently her food has been in the bowl for 2 days. She hasn't eaten anything excpet a carrot ds gave her.
I have tried the lifting the bowl after 30 mins..doesn't make any difference.
She is getting really skinny, spine ,ribs and hipssticking out..which may be old age but unsure.
She is obviously quite hungry as she's sniffing around a lot when food is around.

Dn't know whether to give in and do her some real food and put up with shit everywhere.

DP's dog eats homemade dog food - oats with pilchards/cheap mince usually. Though I can't guarantee it won't giver her the squits.

What sort of food is she getting - wet or dry? If dry have you tried putting some warm water over it?

thanks ,will try eggs..can't possibly give her the runs. But can't give them all the time can I.
You are right I need to forget the squits and just give her something she likes.
I am going to buy some cheap fish from lidl and mix with rice and see what happens.

Hope the roomba doesn't come across anything smelly while I am out .

Maybe the dry food is hurting her teeth, at 13 she prob needs a dental check? She may have toothache.the spitting food out would point to that too..

I don't like a dry only diet, why not try her on chappie as vets like it.

I would not be leaving the food down for 2 days, until she gives in and eats it, it is cruel!!

I think you should take her to the vet for a check up and get some advice.

luvlydECMOrations · 19/12/2008 21:42

Butchers Tripe....try it

Smells and looks like cat food. Yummy

Myrrhcy · 19/12/2008 21:51

I know nothing about dogs but I would be getting a vet's advice pdq if I were in your shoes

JingleBellaAllTheWay · 19/12/2008 22:20

Agree she needs to be checked out by a vet.

Spitting the food over the floor can be a sign of tooth trouble too.

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 22:23

dp says dont give in and feed other stuff

keep presenting dry food and according to him 'no dog will starve itself'

hth

snoopdog · 19/12/2008 22:24

chappie

snoopdog · 19/12/2008 22:25

and the snoopdog was 13 yesterday so i know

JingleBellaAllTheWay · 19/12/2008 22:28

Disagree, Otter - this dog has bones sticking out and is elderly. She needs to see a vet as she is clearly hungry but can't eat her normal food.

Dogs and cats will become emaciated if their teeth are causing too much pain to eat their normal dried food. Also, as I said before the fact that food drops out of her mouth is also indicative of dental trouble.

JingleBellaAllTheWay · 19/12/2008 22:45

Have a look under 'Danger Signals'

here

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 23:08

even with rotten teeth it could still eat ...

ggirls is it used to eating dried food?

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 23:11

dp says did not realise dogs old but its teeth would need to be very sore...

when were they last looked at?

pamplemousse · 19/12/2008 23:15

Take her to the vet I would say. Our dog was a very fussy eater when we first got her, it turned out she was in major pain due to a hip problem. She now eats regularly and happily, but if she misses a pill its back to not eating again.
Hope she's OK and eats soon

NotanOtter · 19/12/2008 23:51

pamplemouse do you remember pamplemouse clothes in the 80's?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 19/12/2008 23:58

definitely take her for a once over by your vet. Is she drinking normally? Any vomiting or diarrhoea? Did she used to have a better appetite than she does now? Not to worry you, but there are all sorts of things that can cause these kinds of signs in older dogs, she might need a blood test and a full MOT. Let us know how you get on.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 20/12/2008 00:03

My dog is exactly the same. Have you tried catfood? My vet said it is fine for dogs but they will need it in larger volumes as obv your dog is not a cat and needs more food.

Also try loads of different brands after many failed attempts and giving lots of unwanted dog food away to my mum's dog we discovered that our dog would eat Butchers tripe mix tins. But only the chicken flavour no others.

JingleBellaAllTheWay · 20/12/2008 09:57

Exactly jooly - liver failure, all sorts of possibles.

Otter - am assuming your dp is a vet, in which case he should not be diagnosing an animal he hasn't seen.

IMO if your elederly dog becomes very skinny and won't eat the very least you owe them is a trip to the vet.

If you cannot/will not do that you should not keep dogs.

Lovesdogsandcats · 20/12/2008 14:01

Otter, what is it with all this 'dp says' ?
Cos honestly, he is talking a right old pile of bullshit. And you should not be putting stuff like that on here.

OP ignore otter and listen to JingleBellaAllTheWay. I agree with all she says and you need to follow that advice.

How is doggy now and are you going to take her to the vet?
