Dog whisperer....used a technique on dog in park today.

I got a lovely dog in May from a rescue centre. He was hard work at first as he barked like crazy when he saw other dogs. Plus I'd been told to keep him away from them and not let him off the lead. Well, he's half whippet so needs a good run. Within a week I had him socialising in the park and off the lead and he's been brilliant.
There's a guy in the park with 2 lovely labs, one white one black. They're very friendly but the black one takes other dogs balls and also jumps up, especially at me for some reason?
So today I was in the park with my dog, wearing my new coat. I saw said guy with his dogs and thought 'oh no'. As the dog bounded over towards me I put out my had and firmly said no the way Ceasar does on the dog whisperer. Seems an obvious thing to do but it's the attitude you have to have for it to work. Anyway she turned tail and went back to her owner And didn't bother us at all.

fantastic result!

I can't believe it but I had to use it again today but with more firmness.
Was walking my lovely dog this morning when I bumped into an old school friend and her not so friendly but also lovely doberman (she isn't a well dog so we'll let her off ) We were chatting away when this guy with a staffy looking dog asked if our dogs were friendly. I said yes and friend put hers on the lead. His dog then went on to try to savage mine
I went over and shouted, stood in front of mine and put my hand out saying no loudly. It went back to it's owner but he just said 'she doesn't usually do that' Note the 'usually'

So in future I'll be avoiding him. Most dogs are friendly on the park thank goodness.

have heard the Caesar Milans shows are heavily edited to show him apparently working wonders. However, I do think his general ideas make sense.

I hate that line 'doesn't usually do that'...hmmmm thats what I was told by the guy whose dog savaged my dog. Bullshit. What he meant was 'owners don't usually make the scene that you are making when my dog rips their dog to bits'.

JumpingJingleBellsDizzy · 20/12/2008 12:21

Yes I suppose they will be edited but you do see people saying 'it only took minutes' and looking shocked so he does do wonders. I've noticed a difference in my dog since I adopted some of his tactics.

Really pisses me off that I'll have to avoid that dog. I think I'll take a picture of him and report it if it happens again.

My mum is a dog trainer - some things DO really take minutes to fix (with serious ongoing input of course - but the diagnosis and first input fix is done within minutes when you know what you're doing!)

I heart Ceaser - he's the one of very few sensible dog trainers on telly at present (the others being on Dog Borstal)

I absolutely love Caesar Milan.

I have used lots of his methods with my dog they make such sense. She is quite dominant and I have told lots of visitors to our house about ignoring her when they first come in and about stepping forward with hand out if she tries to jump up.

Agree about Dog borstal- terrible programme which uses methods more suited to badly behaved children than dogs.

I thought LFFFTA was saying Dog borstal's good too??

Glad you've found the tips useful too smartie
