My idiot DD let the puppy lick her CHOCOLATE yoghurt

The poor puppy threw up about 8 or 9 times last evening. She ate the yoghurt about 4:30 and started throwing up at 5:30 pm. Last threw up at about 7:30 pm.

She has not eaten anything since but has had some water. She is an bit subdued and not her normal self.

Should I let her just sleep it off or should she see a vet?

Seems an unusually violent reaction. How old is the puppy?

Whenever my Dog's got an upset tummy, I starve him for a little while then when I do start to feed him again I give him some plain chicken and boiled rice.

I do this for 24 hours, then start to mix his normal food in with smaller amounts of rice until he's back on normal food again 24 hours later.

I would try on on chicken and rice this morning and if she keeps being sick, then I would get the Vet to check her over.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

''Theobromine, or chocolate, poisoning is actually one of the most commonly encountered poisonings in pet dogs.

Theobromine is found in chocolate, cocoa, cola and tea. A fatal dose of theobromine in a 10kg dog would be approx 65g of baking chocolate. Smaller amounts may not kill but can still cause serious poisoning.

To give an idea of theobromine content, milk chocolate has about 50 mg per ounce and baking chocolate has about 430 mg of theobromine per ounce.

The first signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting, diarrhoea and nausea followed by heart problems and seizures. If you think your dog may have chocolate poisoning the first thing you should do is get your dog to a vet straight away so that they can induce vomiting. If more than a couple of hours have passed, other treatment may be required.''

Definately no food for 24 hours only plenty of fresh water.
Ring your vet and ask for advice.

Hope he feels better soon.

It was a milk chocolate mousse type yoghurt and she can only have had a couple of licks.

She is 14 weeks old. A Maltese terrier x king Charles spaniel.

sounds like she vomited it back up. see how she is today- if she's still poorly go to vets-

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 18/12/2008 07:22

She had her 2nd lot of innoculations on Tuesday, could it be a late reaction to that?

blimey that is a strong reaction to chocolate.
my dog ate a whole box ofchocolates that were wrapped up and under the tree last yr..no reaction at all!
hope your dog is better soon

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 18/12/2008 08:27

A vet on another thread told me recently that it depends on the breed and size of the dog and what kind of chocolate. Dark chocolate is more dangerous for dogs than milk.

I know what you mean though. My parents had a springer who regularly found the selection boxes or Easter eggs and devoured them with no ill effects.

You need to call your vet.

I think it is unlikely to be the chocolate content (not much in a chocolate mousse) but xylitol, which is often used as a sweetener is also toxic to dogs

here

In such a young pup of a small breed you need to pick up the phone and ask the vet, just in case.

your idiot dd?

nice....

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 18/12/2008 16:12

Dropdeadfred
Yes, my idiot DD. I did not call her that to her face obviously but she is 6.8yo and she knows that chocolate is poisonous for dogs and that the puppy can die from eating it.

Mutt
She is much better, almost her normal self. She had some food earlier and kept it down fine. She slept a lot, but then she does that anyway.

really? our old mongrel used to eat loads of chocolate...?

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 18/12/2008 21:16

DDF
Strange, isn't it? As I mentioned earlier our springer spaniel used to steal chocolate and was never ill (unless she ate two selection boxes). We did not know that it WW dangerous for dogs.

She is fine now. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance.
