A little kitten not really if it will be alone for more than 4 hours a stretch.

Have you thought of an older more settled cat that is looking for a second family to call it's own?

CatchaChristmasStar · 17/12/2008 12:22

We always had animals and my parents worked full time and we were at school. We generally got them in the summer holidays though so that we were with them for 6 weeks so they could settle iykwim?

ingles2 · 17/12/2008 12:23

mmm... no. they need too much attention at the beginning.
How about an older cat?

This is just the conclusion I have come to. It just wouldn't be fair on a kitten which needs company and socialisation.

I'm going to look for an adult cat - preferably 2 cats so they can keep each other company when I'm at work (work 3 days)- from a rehoming centre like CP or the RSPCA. The advantage will be that hopefully they will be house trained and probably neutered by then.

We have a 5m old cat who was with us from a kitten. I do work full-time but for the first few months I had a broken foot and was working from home all the time. It does seem OK but DH and the DC get home about 3 so it's not all day.

ClaireDeLoon · 17/12/2008 15:34

OMG that is spooky. I have a 20 week old kitten and I was also at home with a broken foot when we got him. I feel like a strange stalker person now that is trying to be you

OrmIrian · 17/12/2008 15:38

Oh you don't want to be me claire . I'm not sure that I want to be me sometimes.

But that is an odd coincidence I must admit. What colour is your kitten?

whooosh · 17/12/2008 15:50

Two cats ,or even kittens is the best idea. Not great to leave little kittnes for more than 4hrs at a stretch but it wouldn't kill them if they were in a pair.

ClaireDeLoon · 17/12/2008 19:12

He's a grey/brown tabby - what about yours?

He alternates between full on psycho and purry adorable. My two older cats keep him company during the day now I'm back at work but I do agree - two cats are much better, especially if kittens.

MoominMymbleandMy · 18/12/2008 03:07

Only if you have two kittens, I think. They need company.

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 18/12/2008 03:36

Two kittens would be better. We have three cats and they do like playing together and sleeping together.

When I was a child we got a kitten. I remember my father and I were late leaving one morning. The kitten watched my mother leave for work and he was sitting on the back of the chair and crying for her .

Kittens are only incredibly sweet and kittenish for a short time. I think when you pick a slightly older cat you have more of an idea of their temperament. Plus it's very nice not to have to do the hoursetraining! We got new cats about two weeks ago, and deliberately didn't look at the kittens as the rehoming centre had so many cats. Having a pair is nice (very sweet when they cuddle up). Also some rehoming places won't let you have kittens if you say you are not at home.

OrmIrian · 18/12/2008 13:44

Our is an all black female. Just beautiful. But yes we get the mad purring for ages, then all of a sudden she 'plays' using her claws and teeth.

cmotdibbler · 18/12/2008 13:49

When I got my first cat, he was a tiny kitten and I lived on my own and worked FT - but as it was only me, he basically slept all day and was awake in the morning and evenings when he got my full attention. He was a lovely cat, and very, very closely bonded to me.

Currently we have 1 cat who we rehomed when she was 18 months old, and a kitten - and I'd forgotten just how mad they are. I'd def go for a slightly older cat if you are out of the house a lot as they are more capable of amusing themselves

MLWfirsttimemum · 19/12/2008 03:04

My husband and I both work FT and for this reason we got two cats (brothers) from the RSPCA who were at that point 6 months old. This has worked really well, they keep each other company when we are not there. It also means that we are less reluctant to leave them alone at home if we go away for the odd weekend (obviously someone comes to feed them!) I really wouldn't get a single kitten, at least get two.
