Puppy Crate - Crying & Howling

Our 13 week old Springer pup is settling in really well, we've only had him 5 days and we are trying to get him used to his puppy crate.
He's a big baby and so soft so hates being 'put to bed'. We've made great strides in that his howling and crying is getting a bit less each day but it's so distressing to hear him cry and whine. We haven't given in yet and won't, but could someone please tell me what the average time is for a pup this age to get used to sleeping in his crate without all the upset.

Bless him, he's just gone quiet with the odd grumble and whine and is so good through the night, it's just that first 30-45 mins of being separated from us that's so upsetting. I want to go to him but know that would be the worst thing to do and would undo all the progress we have made which I think is pretty fantastic in such a short time.

Then there is the poo'ing indoors - very hit and miss at the moment.
We are telling all our visitors to bring slippers

My puppy (Border TerrierX) is 13wks, and I've had him since he was 8wks. He still cries for a few minutes when I leave him (briefly) during the day, but at night is fine, he goes straight to his crate to curl up and sleep as soon as he has had his last wee. He's been doing this for the last couple of weeks.
He still has the odd accident inside, generally when he is very excited, or I don't hear him cry at the door, or don't get there quickly enough. He also has more accidents in the evening, I don't think he likes going out in the dark. But he's improving all the time.
