Should I get a second cat and the best way to introduce the two moggies to each other!

We got two 6 month old cats from Cats Protection about 2 years ago, a brother and sister, as we had always wanted two cats when previous singleton cat passed away.

Unfortunately the male developed a serious illness and died within a couple of months.

We have been thinking about getting another young cat from CP. Now I've been told about an unwanted 18 mo torty that needs a good home and wondering if two females would go well together, and how to introduce the second cat successfully?

I got two sisters from the CPL and they said that a male is more accepting of a new cat than a female - personally thnk it's bollocks as my mum has two (1 age 9 nd 1 age 5) Not necessarily great friends but good hunting partners and they tolerate each other - much more since my DD arrived and now chases them round the living room!

Go for it - cats are very sociable creatures!

I think two females will be fine - 2 cats is meant to be the optimum number for pets.
Am trying to remember what we did when we got our second, but it was different as he was a raggedy stray who we took in... there was fighting at first (2 males, although both neutered) but I think a key thing is to feed them in separate rooms at first, and just sort of gradually introduce them so they don't feel too threatened. It's a territory thing - but esp with males I think.
Take the poor unwanted torty!

We got our second cat as a stray, when I turned up to collect dsd one evening and she begged me to take her home. Her neighbours had moved and left the cat behind and it was wandering the neighbourhood as no-one would take it in .

The male we already had was a bit put out, and they fought a little but now they tolerate each other (in fact I think they're quite fond of each other - our neighbours say they see them playing in their garden). I do find that the male will go and sleep anywhere that the female was the day before, I think she's a bit "oh FFS" about it .

She did move in with our neighbours and popped back in occasionally. But now they have a cat of their own and she's moved back to us full-time. So it may be true about females not tolerating others so well.

Thanks for the replies (and for bumping, Puzz!) oooh am warming to the idea (I had a torty as a child), going to see the cat at the weekend and will probably go all gooey and bring her home straight away!

(psst, hi Frosty, it's Jodee, long time no see!) How awful some people are, abandoning pets.

Hey Jodee! Had no idea it was you. How are things?

We're doing OK thanks! Totally unprepared for Christmas and everyone coming down with the usual festive illnesses ... hey ho!

Hope dd and dsd are all well, have a lovely Christmas, and good luck with the new business enterprise!
