He apparently ate it this am and he seems fine but I am anxious ( and supposed to be going out to dinner in 20 mins ). Dies he need vet now, or in morning or is there anything I should do.

He's a big dog btw ( old english)

How much did he eat?

I remember a friend telling me how a hamster ate some and died a spectacularly explosive death

I think you should ring the vet / toxic substances (or whatever) help-line. NOW!

Do you have the name of it to google?

Our council rat catcher in the summer told me that the stuff they use for rats now doesn't affect dogs/cats etc.

Can you ring an emergency vet and ask?

there are no details on bait box and the mice man is not answering the phone. He was very well aware that we have both mice and small children in the house and was supposed to bait accordingly.

I'll try him again.

i would ring vet - mines out will txt him

Please call vet asap. Tonight.

Mice poison can contain warfarin which causes internal bleeding - if the dog is given Vitamin K quickly enough, he may be ok.

Please call now.

sullysmum · 09/12/2008 20:45

Hope your dog is okay, thats the reason i only used traps and didnt call the poison man in recently!

EmmalinaC · 09/12/2008 20:53

Bellakissedsanta is right. You must call the vet.

Our dog ate rat poison last year. The vet gave him an emetic (to make him vomit) and he had to take vitamin K for 4 weeks. Many poisons are slow acting and cause internal bleeding so it's not simply a case of thinking 'well he looks ok to me'.

The fact that he is a big dog is in his favour as the dose he has ingested is probably very small but you should call just in case.

Thank you all so much.
We did call the vet and he asked us to check him gums, check he wasn't over heating etc.
he said as 12 hours had passed it was too late to make him vomit but that he was happy for us to observe him and bring him in if we had any concerns.
Still not managed to get hold of mouse man but apparently vet recognised the firm and said he always uses the worst toxins behind skirtings etc and bait left out in the room is mildest mouse-specific stuff.
Dh is going to take him to vet tonight just for a once over anyway

But thank you all very much.

Poor stupid woofer
