my OH thinks i am disgusting because i wash my cat and dog's dishes in the sink. i do them after our own dishes have been done and all my clothes go in a boil wash after every use. he reckons you shouldnt wash pets dishes that often and not in our sink. am i wrong here but i wouldnt want them eating off dirty dishes the same as i wouldnt eat of yesterdays dinner plate.

I do sometimes, although I more often put them in the dishwasher on the assumption that very hot water there will kill off most things anyway.

Agree that pets need clean bowls too

shootfromthehip · 28/11/2008 18:46

I wash our pets' bowls every day IN THE SINK after ours. Where else are you supposed to wash them? iIt's just chopped up bits of meat (not that I'd want to eat it obviously) but still.

NCbirdy · 28/11/2008 18:53

Exactly what does your dh think will happen if you wash pet dishes in your dsink? Dry and tinned food is totally processed and is perfectly safe (although rather yucky) for a human to eat. If you make your own animal food then it is most likely to be made from the off cuts etc of human meat, which is alos fit for human consumption....

Unless you actually, purposly, feed your animal off food then there is no real difference between your food and your animals. It is silly squeamish-ness that leads to this ideas! IMO you should tell your DH to stop being silly and point out that it will be him paying the vet bills when they have poorly tums from dirty dishes (not to mention the poor dc if they accidently end up ingesting the off food in the bowls!)

Actually I have even washed my pets in the sink, never mind their dishes...

Everyone say 'ew!!!!'

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/11/2008 18:59

Yep, pet bowls, pets, children, myself,(when we had no bath for a while) wellies and pots and pans.

differentID · 28/11/2008 19:00

so are you able to wash pet dishes down the toilet then?
it's not as if you're feeding them faeces, is it?

TackyChristmasLights · 28/11/2008 19:01

you wash the dog's bowl? often?

MatNanPlus · 28/11/2008 19:02

Yes, always, and they can often soak with our dishes if needed.

HeadFairy · 28/11/2008 19:03

Of course I do. As yet I don't have a cat bowl sink

Quick swish with boiling hot water will dispose of any nasties lurking after you've finished washing them

I really don't think pets care about whether their dishes are clean or not anyway!

breaghsmum · 28/11/2008 19:15

thank you thank you thank you!!! i knew he was being a weirdo. luckily for me and the pets, he's only home about once a month.i think he was more concerned about the pets licking themselves and other nasties and then licking round the bowls. but my sink and worktops are all disenfected daily so nothing dangerous would hang about. and i did remind him that any illnesses pets get from bad hygiene, we would also get!!! dumb man. going to ring him now and say told u so

I wash them in the dishwasher.

eekamoose · 28/11/2008 19:17

Yes. I wash them on their own in the sink and have a separate brush for my cats plates. I don't put them in the dishwasher because I don't fancy the idea of little bits of cat meat swishing around all our stuff.

Where does OH suggest you wash them?

Goober · 28/11/2008 19:18

I think it is gross to put them in the dishwasher as the dog hair off the bowel would get on everything else.

mysterymoniker · 28/11/2008 19:22

but luckily dog hair is not fatal to humans

breaghsmum · 28/11/2008 19:22

i meant boil washing the cloths that i wash my dishes with!!!! baby brain

OP posts:
mysterymoniker · 28/11/2008 19:23

although if bits of bowel are going in the dishwasher that doesn't sound too healthy . . .

breaghsmum · 28/11/2008 19:24

if its healthy for the dog then i cant see it being that hazardous to us.

You must have more confidence in your decision to wash in the sink.
Of course it's OK. Worry not.

mysterymoniker · 28/11/2008 19:27

(just making a joke of goober's typo above . . .)

breaghsmum · 28/11/2008 19:30

doh!!! theres that baby brain again, totally missed that

OP posts:
Goober · 28/11/2008 19:35

Oh arse!

Pixel · 29/11/2008 13:25

Surely we're only talking about a bit of dried saliva? I wouldn't have thought you could catch anything off the bowl that you couldn't catch off the actual animal so it seems a bit daft to be worrying (although I do thing it totally revolting when people let dogs lick their faces and mouths bleugh!).
I put ours in the dishwasher without a qualm as the combination of very hot water and detergent must kill off any nasties.
