He keeps peeing on the floor, over the side of his litter tray.We have bought him a new, massive tray.Still he does it.I am begining to feel like he is doing it on purpose. If he carries it on we may come to blows.I am fed up of mopping up wee.

Does anyone elses cat do this? What can be done?

He needs to be shown where to go.

You need to completely get rid of the smell of wee where he has done it otherwise he will keep going back there.

He isn't doing it to annoy you.

If he is doing it over the side of the litter tray, then he is doing it in the right place just not getting in the litter tray.

My very old cat does this (19.8 yrs). He puts his front legs in, assumes his whole body is in and then poos and wees over the edge. I cut up very cheap black binliners, put them under the litter tray together with some newspaper so that if he does go over the edge I can just gather up the binliner and newspaper.

It may be a male problem , you know weeing all over seats etc.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 28/11/2008 13:10

You can get a litter tray with a lid like this, then he wouldn't be able to.

I'm sure you can get them cheaper than this btw, it was just the first example I found.

TheGreatScootini · 28/11/2008 13:22

That might be a goer WhereTheWildThingsWere.
I put paper underneath, with what I consider to be a cunning layer of kitchen roll, (to aid absorbancy) but he just pisses on that as well!

Swine.(Obv will not really abandon him BTW.But he is testing me at the moment. He is my nemesis!)

Be thankful it's not your leather sofa or infact your bed he's pissing on [grr] [rant].

Can you tell I'm angry?

TheGreatScootini · 28/11/2008 13:39

I feel your pain. Its just so annoying. And now im paranoid that the whole house smells like cat piss.
Cats taking a liberty.Thats what he's doing..

Our cat did used to do the same thing. We now have the litter box that WTWW linked to, (though we paid about £21 for it) and it was a godsend. SO much less clearing up to do!

Please don't chuck him out!

TheGreatScootini · 28/11/2008 13:53

I would never chuck him out really! Was only joking about that part.Although I did call him some choice names last night whislt I was mopping up

Has he always done this, or is it recent? If so, have you moved house recently, or have any new cats moved in? Our cat is slightly neurotic and after we moved was a nightmare for months - would only wee or poo in one particular corner of the living room, as far away from any windows as possible. It did eventually sort itself out (he has now progressed to pooing in my plant pot just outside the back door) but it was sooooo tough when it was going on!

TheGreatScootini · 28/11/2008 16:30

No we've been here over a year.He is quite highly strung but has never done this before.

Simple answer to this is get yourself a football.

TheGreatScootini · 28/11/2008 16:34

What to kick instead of the cat?

ds came up to me in hysterics yesterday shouting 'blue pooed, come see what blue did, blue pooed on the floor mummy'

i raced in thinking she'd just randomly shat in a corner somewhere to find she'd simply missed the litter tray and was perplexed at the shouting at she was getting from ds poor thing

sorry, thats no help but i did feel the need to share. covered litter tray sounds like a good solution, alot of cats prefer the privacy anyway and it's a bit less of an eyesore for you.

cheeseandsproutssarnie · 06/12/2008 23:09

id take the cat to the vets.when our cat started doing this it turned out he had an infection.

MrsSeanBean · 06/12/2008 23:23

I think this is a male cat thing

My cat does this too, he perches on the edge to raise up and doesn't realise his aim is askew. Sometimes he gets the flow inside, sometimes not.

Paper underneath is a good solution.

edam · 06/12/2008 23:36

Pet shops sell carpet shampoo that deals with the odour, btw. Also handy for any small children going through a pooing on the carpet phase.
