Am i going to regret this? Golden Retreiver or Lab

After months of DH and the kids mithering us for another dog,i agreed to go and look at some today.

Our history is that we had a lhasa apso last year,he was a lovely dog,but he had behavioural problems,we took him to a specialist and he said he was very jealous of DD who is disabled,we tried to show him love and affection but he started weeing against DD and growling when anyone went near her,so we gave him to a lovely lady who already had one and he is very happy there now.

DS went into a depression over it and we said after a few months we,d think about another one,

so ive had a look and the 2 that look good family pets are the golden retreiver and the lab, because of what happened with the other dog i am nervous about getting another, and if anyone has either of these dogs would you say they are good with small children?

TIA

Just say it, ilovemydog:

labradoodle

Jenk,
We have a labrador, who has just turned one and he is very gentle and loving, despite ds2 leaping all over him constantly. I would really recommend labs, because they do seem to have lovely temperaments. Can be a bit bonkers though. But no more so than average small boy

ilovemydog · 01/12/2008 13:49

I can't do it without giggling

bella29 · 01/12/2008 14:05

Listen. It's better than a golden noodle - what was that poodle x retriever called again?

lilymolly · 01/12/2008 14:11

oh labs are fab
I have 2 black ones mother and daughter and have 3 year old dd and another baby due in March

I LOVE MINE

However, they are hard work, involve a lot of exercise, shed hair twice a year, yet are the most loving affectionate dogs.

The mother is hyper and jumps and is more boisterous, the daughter is a lot calmer, and listens more, and was one of the quietest and smallest of the litter so maybe thats why she is calmer or maybe because we made all the mistakes the first time around with her mother.

My 2 dogs shoot on a weekend which they LOVE, so would recommend you try and do something they are bred to do, so they remain stimulated.

HTH

I have a golden lab,who is a bit weird.
He will be ridden like a pony, hoovered, dressed up, you name it.Daft as a brush.
He is incredibly lazy, scared of the dark, in love with one of the cats and very protective of DD. The only negative is that they can be verrrry barky which drives me bonkers.

DrNortherner · 01/12/2008 14:23

We got a 9 month old black lab just over a week ago and he is proving to be a star. Few stressful days with him at the start but now he is doing really well.

Loveley nature and great with kids

Catherinedeneuve · 01/12/2008 14:30

Shiver,
However do you manage to get him out of the hose, once hoovered?

He sounds brill! Mine isn't barky at all, just to show that not all of them are...

iggypiggy · 01/12/2008 14:33

shiver - mine very rarely barks - they are known for being a quiet breed.. but there are always exceptions - sounds like yours is one of them!

shivermetimbers · 01/12/2008 14:35

Use an industrial vacuum cleaner, they are bigger.

shivermetimbers · 01/12/2008 14:38

Maybe mine just likes the sound of his own voice. Mind you he was adult when we got him so there may be an underlying reason for his gobbyness that we dont know about.

Catherinedeneuve · 01/12/2008 14:55

LOL at industrial vacuum cleaner! Knew there must be a way to keep the bugger from smelling so bad.
