as my mums partners dog is very hypo!... and i mean hypo!!..as a joke we think he got ADHD!

My mum looks after the dog 9/10 whilst her partner works full time but the dog doesnt responds well to my mum when she is being firm with him to calm down, stay in the box and be quiet as hes always barking. (hes a big yorkie). it seems that he only remember things for 2 seconds and then hes off on one. he is a VERY attention seeker as always seek for attention. hes is a very affectionate dog bug but most of the time it gets too much as he try and sit on your chest!!

My mum always takes him out every night as she works 3 days a week.

Mum doesnt have any money to take him to training classes and weve had dogs before but my mum is on the verge of having a nervous breakdown with this dog.

help much appreciated!

We had our dog done and it had zero impact on his personality. We did him at 9 months though so he was still well in his puppy stage. How old is the dog?

yes, neutering unlikely to make much difference -- well, except for the following night

It depends on the age of the dog - and even then it doesn't always calm them down much.

Would your mum be able to spend some time teaching him tricks or something? Perhaps some more/longer walks than he's getting now? The majority of hyperactivity problems in dogs are because the dog is bored. Yorkie's can be pretty smart creatures so the stimulation of tricks and training might really make him happier.

A good way to occupy dogs when you are busy is to give them kongs - hollow rubber toys which you can pack with food to keep the dog busy for ages.

Also, being calm around the dog and only paying attention to him when he shows calm behaviour will help - even shouting at a dog who is behaving in an excitable way is a reward in the form of attention. When he's settled in his bed, make a big fuss of him. When he's leaping around for attention, ignore him.

neutering mainly cuts down on/out roaming, it can help with dog:dog aggression in about 50% of cases too

main benefit is prevention of unwanted litters and of the rare(ish) but often fatal prostate cancer
