Do you let your dog on your couch/bed? How strict are you?

dh is adamant that the new dog isn't getting up on the couch or bed - although he lets her on the bottom of ds's bed!

But she looks so comfy all curled up on the couch - which is antiqued leather - so looks beat up anyway!!

Nooooo don't let the dog on the bed! I used to have mine on the bed as a child, but then saw someone on TV a few months ago who was mauled by her very very lovely dog in her sleep - she thinks it was just a nightmare he had, but the dog insticts kick in. No matter how lovely they are. I personally would let a dog on the couch because the 'hygeine' issue isn't an issue to me (as long as they are clean!) but never again will I even let a dog into the bedroom.

rislip · 27/11/2008 16:01

No. My dog is over 8 stone, so if he was on the sofa, we'd be on the floor. Also it's a bit grim to let them on the bed I think.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 27/11/2008 16:01

Nope.

If my dog came in covered in mud one day (as she so often does) and was usually allowed on the furniture then she will not understand why she is suddenly being screamed at.

Training is all about consistancy. If you wouldn't be happy with her doing it when muddy then you mustn't let her do it when she's not - they cannot tell the difference and it is unfair on the animal.

Also, she'll do it in other people's houses which would make me

She really only sleeps on his bed when I'm reading to him etc - then she comes back through to the lounge with us. Tries a few times to get up on the couch with us - then gives us a dirty look and trots off back to ds' bed. She then comes upstairs with us when we go to bed.
Prob is - she can open doors - so even if we lock her out of ds room - she can sneak in.

Yup on the couch.
On the bed.
In the bed.
Occasionally in the double sleeping bag when we're really cold .

ohdearwhatamess · 27/11/2008 16:16

Yes, unless covered in mud. Usually have stairgate at the top of the stairs closed atm, so his bed options are somewhat reduced.

Marne · 27/11/2008 16:18

Yes ,my dog gets on the sofa as long as she's not muddy, she doesn't go upstairs but sometimes sleeps with me on the sofa.

Lovesdogsandcats · 28/11/2008 15:06

Yep - floor/chair/settees/beds/in beds etc.

Anywhere. In fact my dogs are spoilt come to think of it.

unknownrebelbang · 28/11/2008 15:09

Ours used to sneak on the bed whilst DH was sleeping on nights, but she always waited until I'd gone to work. DH was totally oblivious til he woke up.

She never did it any other time.

Other than that, no she had a basket, or could lie wherever she wanted on the floor.

snigger · 28/11/2008 15:12

Never never never .... with DH's dog.

When I got my own, and he was a small pup, I have to admit to allowing him to sleep on a blanket on the chair in the corner of our room.

Kicked him out when he rolled in something long dead and even shampoo wouldn't alleviate the reek, and he slept happily in his kennel thereafter.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2008 16:40

not allowed on sofa

def not allowed upstairs let alone on beds

they need to know that they are last in the family, and our puppy has a very nice huge crate, with fur lined carpet and fluffy pillow and toys that is in the kitchen

clumsymum · 28/11/2008 16:50

Yep, on the furniture, and on our bed when we're there, they don't want to anyway when we're not. They don't sleep on our bed, one sleeps under our bed, one down in the kitchen (she's a real snorer), but weekend mornings often see our bed heaving with Me, DH, DS and two dogs on it.

BUT ... ours are two small spaniels, they are lapdogs, and they are small, light and (generally) pretty clean (get zipped into those towel bag things if they come in muddy or wet).

My sister has a springer and 2 collies, and they are just toooooo much clambering all over you. So if I had bigger dogs, I'd try to say no (difficult with cute puppies tho').

purpleduck · 28/11/2008 17:09

yep, mine do.

Mine aren't allowed in certain areas when they are wet, and I think they are ok. They haven't called Dogline yet.

breaghsmum · 28/11/2008 17:15

no, mine is a dog and needs to be kept a dog. sofas and beds are for humans. i can be quite moody and there are times when i dont want any contact so if i let him on the sofa sometimes and then screamed at him to get off cos i was in a strop, that wouldnt be fair. from the start i refused to let him upstairs or onto the sofa. he knows now and happily lies in his own bed.

Lauriefairycake · 28/11/2008 17:18

No, it's not good for the dog and their place in the 'pack'

It's shit parenting frankly

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2008 18:17

PMSL at dogging

blonde has a rude mind

clumsymum · 28/11/2008 18:43

but I have my dogs as cuddly pets, and we cuddle them on the sofa when we watch telly.

bella29 · 28/11/2008 18:50

LOL at Portly Sack.

Tsk tsk at Blonde for lowering the tone

Used to have 2 dogs plus one cat in bed with dh and me until I was 7mths pg with ds and we ran out of room.

Admit that I do sleep much better sans dogs, but 2 cats have recently started creeping in, plus dd most nights so I guess we are no further forward

Sometimes have a cuddle with 30kg of labrador pup in front of the telly too

twinsetandpearls · 28/11/2008 18:53

my springer got in the bath with me once

mysterymoniker · 28/11/2008 18:56

lol at 'place in pack'

yes, dog allowed pretty much everywhere by invitation - more environmentally friendly than an electric blanket
