Am I being sentimental about this pony?

Just been musing on the little 12.1 pony I keep for the kids. He is a spirited pony who causes mayhem in the field, terrorising the big 'uns. Not nasty as such just constantly pestering them to play by barging them and throwing his weight around. He largely gets ignored (other horses range from 16.2 - 17.2). He will kick them if they try to bully him however. With people he has always been a star. Tolerates all manner of indginities from kids. They (kids) are respectful of him though and have been taught the basics of how/ what is safe with any horse. There have however been a few memorable occasions when he would have been justified in threatening kids but he never has. He actively seeks human company and loves his work.
Just recently he has been lame so lots of hosing, boots on/off etc and prodding of said poorly leg. We have had much grumpiness with face pulling and putting ears back. On one occassion my aunt was feeding them. After he had finished and mopped up she shooed him away from behind to sweep up, and to see how he was in walk/trot and the little git kicked her. Luckily he is not shod and has tiny hoofs but there was still a good bruise. She retaliated swiftly and he got the broom on his bum (fully rugged so more shock/noise than a real smack)
She is now obviously cautious around him and has warned me to take more care with the kids. This happened about 10 days ago and he is sound now and has shown no more hints of aggression.
Am I being sentimental in thinking he kicked because of poorly leg and whilst I will be extra vigilant, to pretty much treat him as before? Or would you see it as a more serious problem?

How old are your dc? Tbh I wouldn't trust him.

Do the dc deal with him unsupervised or is there always an adult around?

piratecat · 27/11/2008 07:36

well you have said he is spirited, and tbh if someone came
barging up 'behind' me shooing me, and i
had a poorly foot, and
people have been messing about with it, and then i was made to trot on it.

Then i think he was justifiably pissed off!! Prob a 'reaction'.

He's not a Welsh Mountain pony by any chance is he?? I had one as a child and he was an arse! Maybe he isn't fond of your aunt ??!!

I think being "shooed from behind" would encourage a quick kick from lots of horses that wouldn't normally think of doing so! I imagine it was that sparked the kick, rather than grumpiness due to his bad leg. Presumably your dc wouldn't behave like that with him?

How old are they? How old is he?

DS is 3 and knows not do do anything behind a horse, presumably including "shooing". I wouldn't see it as a serious problem.

I'm with the pony on this one. If I did that to a horse or pony & got kicked I certainly wouldn't blame the animal.

I think the pony is probably peed off about being fiddled about with. My 12.2 is a little devil if the mood takes him, he cornered my boys in the field once when they were trying to catch him. He doesn't dare mess with me, but anyone else is fair game. Perhaps now he's better he can get some more exercise, can you lead him off another horse or do what I do and take mine for a walk at the same time as walking the dogs (my neighbours think I'm mad!) - sounds like he's got plenty of energy to burn now!

piratecat · 27/11/2008 13:15

my pony used t be an angel with my mum, but was a devil with me. he was so fat, but would think nothing of trying to rear up to get me off his back. only about 6 incjes off the ground tho!!

bella29 · 27/11/2008 15:06

Thelwell comes to mind, piratecat

piratecat · 27/11/2008 16:44

he was known as Thelwell, and he was dun couloured, it was quite uncanny. god he hated me!!!

bella29 · 27/11/2008 17:10

I must be psychic

lubblyjubblies · 27/11/2008 17:35

He is 8 and dc's are 5,4 and 2.
There is always an adult around. The 5 yr old is the only one confident enough to be around him without really close supervision and she knows all the rules about what she can/cant do.
Piratecat, yes he is a welshie. If you saw him perform with the other horses, its unbelievable...and to think, before he came we were worried he would be bullied by the horses. Never for a second thought we would have to watch for him bullying them
