DS#1's black and white female rat has developed a big lump in her groin. We had noticed that she has got thinner - she used to be the big one and now she's slimmer than her sister. I cleaned their cage this morning and when I took her out I felt this lump. Not noticed it before. She's still eating and seems to get about as well as before.

I've heard that they can be prone to tumours but are they always fatal? I will take her to the vets asap but our other rat was the first the vet had ever treated and if she isn't used to dealing with rats I'm afraid she might say it was untreatable if maybe it wasn't. The other rat hurt her tail and the vet told me that rats don't live very long as if to say it wasn't worth treating . Do they always need to be removed.

She's an adorable little beast. Loads of character. I don't want to lose her. And I think it would be so awful for her sister too

Sorry to say ime rats either die of tumors, or lung problems It doesn't sound good, especially with the weightloss
