My dog is house trained but does her buisness outside and then brings it in to the conservatory .

Does anyone know why she does this? Or how i can stop her doing this?

Im getting fed up with cleaning up her mess, she has the back garden to poo in.

Bump, is she the only dog that does this?

LMAO sorry no, does she like eat it or something?

ohdearwhatamess · 08/11/2008 16:00

Does she carry it in in her mouth? Does she eat it once she has brought it in? If so you could put pineapple or ketchup in her food (small amounts). That is supposed to make the poo taste horrible and might deter her.

barbiehouse · 08/11/2008 16:05

you can buy tablets calledDETER, which will also make her poo taste foul and should stop her doing it. not heard of this before!

Marne · 08/11/2008 17:18

Yes sometimes she will eat it , i have seen her outside eating it too, is this a common problem? sorry, only had her for 10 months (she not 1 till after x-mas).

Sorry if TMI

I will look for DETER, can i get it from a pet shop?

your vets may have it, not sure about pet shops

Tiggiwinkle · 08/11/2008 22:13

One of my dogs has this disgusting habit too! (She does not eat her own, but one of our other dog's stuff!
When I asked our vet he suggested the pineapple-I have not heard of the tablets. The pineapple does seem to work to a certain extent by the way.

My staff bitch used to eat my cavalier's poos, not her own though. The correct term for it is Coprophagia. To a dog its perfectly normal, to us humans its disgusting!! She can be doing it to seek nutrients missing from her diet, she could be just plain hungry, or just attracted by the pleasing (to a dog) scent. To discourage, make sure her diet is nutritionally complete and she's getting enough. You should never reprimand the dog apparently, though i found this hard. With my dog a had to follow my cavalier out whenever i thought she was due a poo and pick it up so Missy couldn't get to it. She's nearly 9 months now and thankfully doesn't do it anymore but it took me about a month to crack it. They say they can grow out of it by the time they reach 12 months. I hope this helps you. You're definately not the only one with this problem, it is relatively normal x

For a dog to eat its own poo is surprisingly common (less common to bring it inside, I think). Supposedly the poo just tastes of whatever they've eaten.

One of my springers used to eat other dogs' poo, never his own. He grew out of it eventually, thank goodness.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 09/11/2008 12:02

Lots of dogs eat poo- their own/ foxes/ other dogs, they don't seem all that fussy! It isn't a sign that there is anything wrong with her diet- some dogs just seem to eat it because it is there. Personally, I don't think any of the things for addition to the diet help- the only solution is to pick it up as soon as you can!

claire187 · 10/11/2008 10:37

The attention to diet was just the advice my vet gave me, yet i knew i was feeding her a fine diet so i agree with Joolyjoolyjoo, the best results come from just picking it up, she'll soon get out of the habit that way. If you find she's to quick turning round to get it before you reach her, try putting her on a long leash when she goes out to toilet and gentle tug her away when she has finished her business. Good luck x

claire-my dog is a staffy , she used to always eat it (i thought it was a puppy thing), i would'nt mind as much, its just when she brings it into the conservatory (like a gift for me).

How old is she now then....don't scare me i thought Missy was finally over it!!
Haven't had her bring it in, she'd never share her prize possession ....No i'm sure I've cracked it with her now thanks God

Lily is 10 months old, so still young, i hope she grows out of it soon . Not the best gift in the world .

yes its quite common.
If I don't catch him first, one of my dogs gets his head in the cat litter tray and eats theirs...you can hear him crunching the cat litter that coats it

claire187 · 14/11/2008 21:26

ewwww...that would that would give me teeth freeze lol !!
