He's a border collie just a year old I'm heartbroken and ds will be too. Don't really want to take him to a rescue centre but what other options do I have

Is there a border collie rescue association nearby to you?

What about returning him to the breeder?

Sorry to hear the news

NCbirdy · 07/11/2008 21:25

Breed rescue, they are great! Often they can take then into kennles if you really need to but they will also often rehome home to home, so avoiding the upsetting bit where the dog has to stay in kennels. They also know more about the kind of people who are right for their particular breed.

Google collie rescue and you should find a local one to you.

HTH!

RumMum · 07/11/2008 21:27

maybe try wiccaweys... I think they may be near you.. it is a rescue... here is the website... I got my BC from there,

www.wiccaweys.com

before you judge a rescue, look at the website and see what a good job they do rehomeing the dogs.. all the wanna be dog owners are home checked, given advice, etc..

good luck

I've got nothing against how rescue's re-home just hate the thought of him being all sad in a kennel

wiccaweys foster dogs out... they don't do 'kennels'...

NutterlyUts · 07/11/2008 21:34

Try your breeder, then a breed rescue, then local shelter.
Almost all breeders will take dogs back.

Am on a number of BC lists if you want me to contact the breeder for you? just email me at [email protected] with her name, or her breeder affix if you know it

NutterlyUts · 07/11/2008 21:37

forgot to add, if you don't know your breeder, or don't think they'd have him back, I reckon I could find him a home in a flash

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 07/11/2008 21:39

Canine Defence League? They don't put a healthy dog down....

Don't feel guilty about re homing the dog....

barbiehouse · 07/11/2008 21:40

Speak to your local vets - they may know good clients who have recently lost an animal and may be looking for another

alibobins · 07/11/2008 21:50

Thanks Nutterly I've contacted the breader and they don't want him back they've got 15 dogs of their own and plenty of puppies.
I'll enquire at vets tomorrow.

If you want, I can put out a home wanted email to the lists to see if any BC folk want him? If so, just drop me an email with a brief little bit about him (age, sex, neutered etc, what he can do (eg tricks) etc) and some contact details

lilymolly · 07/11/2008 21:59

Can your ds not take any medication to prevent him developing symptoms of the allergy?

Just a random thought.
I would hate to have to get rid of my dogs due to allergies

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 07/11/2008 22:03

Aww, poor you, ds, and dog. Can you try petalese (?), it is supposed to help with allergies.

If you decide you have to rehome him, the dogs trust are great (they were the national canine defence league), they never put a dog to sleep, and if a dog doesn't get rehomed quickly they'll foster them. Couldn't be anything worse than thinking your dog might be put down just because he can't find a home

alibobins · 07/11/2008 22:07

Ds is already on regular medication for various allergies and he has only this week started to react to the dog his chest was so bad tonight thought we were going to have to take him to A&E
I really am devestated sat here with tears rolling down my face
Think its the hardest thing I've ever had to do

Oh yes, I have had dealings with Wiccaways in the past, they are really very good. I fyou go on the website and get their contact number you could chat things through with them. They are really helpful and very understanding indeed. From the re-homing side they soend a lot of time talking to prospectives and they are quite happy to tell you the dog you want is not the dog you should have etc.

I would really say they are worth a call if they are near to you.

I hope you get something sorted out, try not to feel guilty, you have to do the right thing here, as long you started out with good intentions you cannot help how things unfold.

barbiehouse · 08/11/2008 10:49

Meant to sat, you may be best going to vets in the week, when there regular staff is on, and they may be more inclined to help. Also check out consultation times and avoid those if poss.
